Alfaretta Krueger

October 12, 1906 — February 22, 2006

Alfaretta Mae Krueger, age 99, formerly of Green Lake, passed away early Wednesday morning, February 22, 2006, at the Markesan Residence Home in Markesan.
Born Alfaretta Gladys “Mae” Hall in a log cabin in the Town of Buffalo, Marquette County, WI on October 12, 1906, she was the sixth and last surviving child of Royal Lunt and Mary (Nelson) Hall. Alfaretta married Leonard Krueger at her family home on November 10, 1924. They lived a short time in Pardeeville after they married and they then settled in Dalton in 1926, where Leonard was the postmaster. In 1941 they moved to Green Lake when Leonard was elected Registrar of Deeds for Green Lake County. She often helped her husband maintain the county records and her hand writing can be found in the various ledgers of that time. They remained in Green Lake until Leonard died on April 29, 1996. She moved to Markesan in 1999. She was an excellent cook. Her apple pie was the best. Despite her Norwegian heritage, she learned to make excellent sauerkraut in deference to her husband’s German heritage. She was blessed with a mischievous sense of humor and the charisma and warmth to fill a room.
Alfaretta was a long time active member of the Federate Church of Green Lake where she was a member of the Ladies’ Aide and the Choir for many years. She was also a founding member and one of the last surviving members of the “Friday Club”.
With her passing, an era has ended. She will be missed by all who had the pleasure and good fortune to know her and share her company.
She is survived by a son, Wayne (Marjorie) Krueger, Lake Worth, Fl; and a daughter, Georgia (Gerald) Stellmacher, Fairwater; a former daughter-in-law, Eugenia Krueger Whelihan, Green Lake; seven grandchildren: Karen (Thomas) Jones, AZ; Richard Krueger, and Mark (Ellen) Krueger, Green Lake; Maureen (Daniel) Bohleber, NY; Richard (Sarah) Hammersly, Jr., Grenada; Barbara (Mark) Zaliski, CT; and Gary (Tricia) Stellmacher, Fairwater; 11 great-grandchildren: Drew Vandervelde, Margo Jones, Sherri Krueger, Dustin Krueger, Jason Krueger, Kevin and Peggy Sue Donahue, Carly and Lindsey Zaliski, Madyson and Max Stellmacher.
She was preceded in death by her parents; six siblings: Elizabeth “Libby” Estep, Jessie Metcalf, Maciel Ritchie, William A. Hall, Royal Hall, and Kathleen Anderson Bullis; and three children: an infant daughter and son, and son Richard Krueger on September 30, 1949.
