Anona Teska

July 11, 1905 — February 28, 2001

Anona Haberkorn Teska, age 95, of Ripon, WI, died Wednesday, February 28, 2001, at Ripon Medical Center. Anona was born on July 11, 1905 in South Byron, WI the eldest child of Otto and Adela (Timm) Haberkorn. She attended grade school in South Byron and high school in Fond du Lac and Milwaukee, graduating from North Division High School in 1922. She graduated from Fond du Lac Normal School in 1923 and taught for several years in one room schools in the Alto area.

Anona graduated magna cum laude from Ripon College is 1929. While in college she was on the men’s debate team, starred in a play, and was a charter member of the Ripon College League of Women Voters.

On August 18, 1929, Anona married P.T. Teska in Fond du Lac. She taught for one year at Price County Normal School in Phillips, WI. After four years in Moose Lake, MN, the Teska’s moved to Fond du Lac where Anona taught English, typing, shorthand, and business law and directed school plays at the Fond du Lac Commercial College. Mrs. Teska taught freshman English for the University of Wisconsin Extension in Milwaukee. After three years in Baton Rouge, LA, the Teskas moved to Oklahoma where Anona taught Latin and government in high school. She was president of the Norman, Oklahoma League of Women Voters, and also president of the Oklahoma state League of Women Voters.

After her divorce from Dr. Teska, Anona moved to Washington D.C., where she was a representative and staff writer for the National League of Women Voters for ten years.
Anona retired to Ripon in 1974. She was elected to the Ripon School Board and was Ripon’s representative to CESA 6.

Anona is survived by her sons Dr. John (Carol) Teska of Wautoma and Dr. James (Dr. Betty) Teska of Carbondale, IL, her sister Priscilla Walter of Ripon, her sister in law Lucille Haberkorn of Fond du Lac. She is further survived by seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren, and a special great niece, Kris Westphal of Fond du Lac.
Anona was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Victor and George Haberkom, and two brothers and sister’s in law, R.J. (Alice) Teska and Hazel (John) Thompson.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 pm Sunday, March 4, 2001 at ButzinMarchant Funeral Home in Ripon. At her request, there will be no religious service or graveside service. Internment will be at Lamartine Cemetery at a later date.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Parkview Care Center for making Anona’s last days as pleasant as possible. A memorial has been established.
