Arden W. Gatzke, age 88, of Ripon, passed away on Thursday, November 20, 2008, at Ripon Medical Center with his family at his side.
Arden was born on March 14, 1920, the son of Theodore and Amanda (Zimmerman) Gatzke in Ripon, WI. He went to school at Arcade, Ceresco, and graduated from Ripon High School. Arden served his country in the US Army during WWII as a tank commander in the 2nd Armored Division from 1941 to 1945. He served in campaigns from Africa to Berlin, receiving the Purple Heart for wounds he received during the Battle of the Bulge. On December 22, 1945 he married Elizabelth Wepner in the parsonage. He was a member of Our Saviours United Church of Christ in Ripon, and was a charter member of the Schultz-Klemp-Wentland V.F.W. Post #5278 in Ripon. Arden worked as a platen press operator for 4 years at the Advertisers and 34 years at Fabrico.
Survivors include two sons, Daniel (Kay) Gatzke of Oconomowoc, and David (Linda) Gatzke of Ripon; seven grandchildren, Christopher (Leigh) Gatzke of Ripon, Anne Gatzke and special friend Tom Peters of Denver, CO, Jennifer (Doug) Schmidt of Ripon, WI, Meghan Gatzke of Oconomowoc, WI, Jonathan (Fiancée Lelani Sanchez) Gatzke of Ripon, WI, Joseph (Kandance) Ferrari of Ripon, and Tracy (Patrick) Cramer of Ripon; thirteen great-grandchildren, Jaylen , Riley, and Libby Gatzke; Taylor and Katya Dudzinski, Keegan Schmidt, Cullen Gatzke, Memphis Gatzke , Aidan Ferrari, Tyler Wier and Jessica Oursler, Emily and Matthew Cramer all of Ripon; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Elizabeth; one brother, Harold; and three sisters, Florence, Leona, and Mildred.
Visitation for Arden W. Gatzke will be held on Monday, November 24, 2008, from 9-11:00 a.m. at the Butzin-Marchant Funeral Home in Ripon.
Funeral service for Arden W. Gatzke will be held on Monday, November 24, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at the Butzin-Marchant Funeral Home with Reverend Mark R. West officiating. Interment will follow at Garden of the Cross Cemetery in Ripon. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Our Saviours UCC Scholarship Fund, the Ripon V.F.W. #5278, or the Ripon Historical Society.
