Arlis Edgington Kentnich, age 78, of Green Lake, WI passed away unexpectedly August 5, 2014, with her husband and son at her side.
She was born on June 25, 1936 in Los Angeles, CA, the daughter of Ethel L. (Jones) and Ralph Edgington. During her childhood she spent about two weeks every year vacationing at her grandparent’s home on Green Lake. Arlis graduated from Westlake School for Girls in Los Angeles in 1954.
She graduated from the University of Wisconsin in Madison February of 1960 majoring in English. During her college years she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. Also during her college years she took one year off from her formal studies to travel around the world.
Arlis met her first husband at the University of Wisconsin. She married Dr. James D. Whiffen December 30, 1960. She moved permanently to Madison, WI to live with her new husband. She had her first and only child, Gregory James Whiffen on August 1, 1965. She lived in Madison until 1991 when she moved to Green Lake, WI, her favorite place in the world. She married her childhood friend William J. Kentnich November 23, 2003. Arlis split her time in recent years between living in Palm Springs, California in the winter and Green Lake, Wisconsin during spring, summer, and fall.
Arlis was an avid runner in Madison. She also enjoyed boating, art, bridge, tennis, and was on the Crab Apples bowling team. In later years she took up hiking in Palm Springs, often hiking the local mountains on a daily basis. She loved cooking for her family and was known far and wide for her wonderful dishes. Even in later years when she lost the sense of taste, her cooking remained the best. She loved gardening, turning her home into a green house in the winter when all of her plants came inside. She was a protector of animals of all sizes.
She was devoted and loving mother, wife, grandmother, and friend. She often said her son and grandchildren were her greatest accomplishments. Her sister, Lyn Edgington Platler predeceased her. She is survived by her husband, William J. Kentnich, her son, Gregory Whiffen, daughter-in-law, Diane Gale Whiffen, grandchildren, Benjamin and Ella Whiffen.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 19, 2014 from 9 to 11:00 am at Butzin-Marchant Funeral Home, 515 Mayparty Dr., Ripon, WI 54971.
A memorial service for Arlis will immediately follow the visitation at 11:00 am also at Butzin-Marchant Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to Green Lake Area Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 86, Green Lake, WI 54941.
