Barbara Ann Hempe, age 82, of Markesan, passed away Saturday, December 1, 2007 at home with her family by her side.
Barbara was born on January 22, 1925, in Oak Park, IL, the daughter of Gordon and Anna (Johnson) MacLeod. She graduated from Oak Park High School in 1943, and then went on to attend DePauw University, the University of IL, and the Kathryn Gibbs Secretarial School. Barbara was employed as a Teachers Aide in Glen Ellyn, IL School Districts #89 and #41. On June 14, 1947 Barbara married Howard Hempe, and the couple lived in Oak Park, Elmhurst, and Glen Ellyn, IL areas until they moved to a home on big Green Lake in 1995. She was a devoted mother and housewife, as well as a member of Homemakers, Princeton Garden Club, the Green Lake Seniors Bowling League, and served as a Charter Member of the Womens Green Lake Investment Club. In her spare time, Barbara volunteered at the Green Lake Library, the Thrasher Opera House, the Berlin Hospital, and the Green Lake County Head Start. Barbara was a former member of Faith Lutheran Church in Glen Ellyn, IL, where she was in the Altar Guild and member of Ruth Circle. She also taught Sunday School and VBS, and was more recently a member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ripon. She was a member of Dorcus Circle at the Church.
Survivors include her husband, Howard Hempe, her 4 children; Karen (Forest) Andrews, Linda (Paul) Marmillion, David (Sue) Hempe, and Deborah (Lee) Berdinski, 8 grandchildren; Ryan Andrews, Kevin Marmillion, Andrew Marmillion, Meghan Marmillion, Kayla Hempe, Amanda Hempe, Jennifer (Brock) Young, and Rebecca (Tim) Marshall, and 2 great grandchildren; Caleb and Michael Marshall. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Jean MacLeod.
Visitation for Barbara Ann Hempe will be held on Wednesday, December 5, 2007 from 1:00-2:00 pm at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ripon.
Memorial Service for Barbara Ann Hempe will be held on Wednesday, December 5, 2007 at 2:00 pm at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ripon with Reverend Richard Johnson officiating.
