Captain David Parsons

Captain David Cleveland Parsons, age 79, of the Town of Brooklyn, Green Lake County, passed away on Monday, June 3, 1991, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Appleton.

Captain Parsons was born June 9, 1911, in the Town of Rushford, Winnebago County, a son of Thomas and Junaette Clevelenad Parsons. On November 30, 1934, he married Caroline Pomeroy in Waukegan, IL. She preceded him in death on June 18, 1985. He then married Marie Alvin on July 23, 1988, at Our Saviours United Church of Christ in Ripon.

His life was on the Great Lakes and the Seaway. He started with United States Steel Corporation in 1929, and sailed on the Great Lakes as an ordinary seaman. He soon became a certified seaman and then a licensed officer (Third Mate). In 1965, he became Captain on the steamer William P. Palmer. In 1966, he sailed the motor vessel Eugene P. Thomas and also, the steamer Sewell Avery. In 1967, he sailed the steamer Leon Frasser. He remained on the Fraser until 1974, when he was transferred to the Cason J. Callaway. He served on that ship unti his retirement in 1976.

Captain Parsons was a member of Our Saviours United Church of Christ in Ripon, was a charter member of Ducks Unlimited, and Sturgeon for Tomorrow. He was a member of the Ripon Rifle and Pistol Club and was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association. He was a member of the Maritime Museum of Manitowoc. Mr. Parsons also was a member of the Wisconsin Bow Hunters and Safari Club International, Wisconsin Chapter. He was also a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve.

Survivors include his wife, the former Marie Piepiorka; four step-sons, James (Sue) Wallace and Jack (Bev) Wallace of Berlin, Thomas (Sandy) Wallace and Jerry (Jackie) Wallace of Ripon; three step-daughters, Judy (Dennis) Schley of Wautoma, Kathryn (David) Darnick of Berlin and Mary Lou (Chuck) Seaman of Berlin; seven grandchildren, Tammy, Tim, Corey, and Jimmy Wallace, Christ and Eric Darnick, and Luke Seaman, all of Berlin. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Caroline; three brothers, Milton, Earl and Arthur; three sisters, Ethel, Blanch and Evengeline; and one son, Allen.

Friends may call from 4 until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 5, 1991, at Butzin-Marchant Funeral Home, Ripon. Funeral Services for Captain Parsons will be held Thursday, June 6, 1991 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Saviours United Church of Christ in Ripon. The Reverend James Mohr will officiate. Entombment will follow in Shrine of Rest Mausoleum, Town of Empire, in Fond du Lac County. A memorial for Our Saviours United Church of Christ has been established in his name.
