Caroline Chaffin

Caroline Louise (nee Koentopp) Chaffin, age 83, of Ripon, WI, died Tuesday, October 22, 1996, at Parkview Care Center in Ripon where she had briefly resided.

She was born February 8, 1913, in the Township of Metomen, a daughter to Carl M. and Elizabeth E. (Toll) Koentopp. She attended rural school, graduated from Ripon High School in 1931, and Green Lake County Normal, Berlin in 1932, and taught rural schools in Green Lake and Fond du Lac Counties. She substituted in the Ripon schools for many ears. Caroline later served as a secretary for many years in the Trust Department of Valley First National Bank of Ripon, formerly the First National Bank, retiring in 1980.

On June 11, 1938, she married Herbert H. Chaffin at the church parsonage and they made their home in Ripon. She was a member of the first Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ripon, now called Our Saviour’s United Church of Christ. She taught Sunday School, was Supt of both the Primary and Junior Depts., was Director of Vacation Church School, Womens Guild past Vice-President, served on various committees of the church, and was a member of Everybody Singers at OSUCC. Caroline was active in the Ripon Community serving as Brownie Scout Leader and Intermediate Leader, the Waupun Girl Scout Council, and Director of both the Brownie and Girl Scout Day camps. She served as treasurer of the Alice Callan P.T.A., was a 4-H Club Leader, former President of the Women’s Majoring Bowling League, past Noble Grand of Pilgrim Rebekah Lodge and past President of the Wisconsin Rebekah Assembly. She was active in garden club, and was past President of both the Ceresco Garden Club and the Fox River Valley District, and had been an officer of the Garden Club Federation.

She is survived by her daughter, Carol A. (Michael) Frailing of Appleton; two grandsons, Kenneth Prellwitz of Neenah and Darrell (Colette) Prellwitz of Oak Creek; stepdaughters, Stephanie (James) Lucero and Racquel Volkman; great-grandchildren, Brynna and Kiley Prellwitz; sister, Hazel E. Below of Ripon; nieces, nephews, and sisters-in-law. She was preceded in death by her husband on July 30, 1977 and parents.

Funeral service will be Thursday, October 24, 1996, at 11 am at Our Saviour’s United Church of Christ in Ripon with Reverend Eric Burnard officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery in Ripon.

Visitation will be Wednesday, October 23, 1996, from 4 until 8 pm at Butzin-Marchant Funeral Home in Ripon and again on Thursday from 10 am until the time of the service at the church. Memorials contributions will be directed to the Organ Fund of Our Saviour’s Church.
