Charles Gloyd

Charles E. Gloyd, age 89, formerly of Ripon, WI, passed away Saturday, July 17, 2004 at Bethel Home, Oshkosh, WI.

Charles was born July 20, 1914 at Prairie Farm, WI, the fourth child of Elmer and Mary Abbie (Trotter) Gloyd. The family moved to Eagle River, WI in 1919. As a young man, Charlie supported his family by serving in the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) from 1933-1934 in northwestern Wisconsin. One of the projects he worked on was the building of Pattison State Park. With some of his earnings he bought a guitar, began singing on a local radio program and became quite a celebrity in the Superior, WI community. The family later settled in Ripon and Charlie found employment at Speed Queen in 1937. On June 13, 1942 he married the late Violet Hoffman. Charlie served his country during WWII in the U.S. Army from September 1942 until September 1945. He was a medic in the European Theater for the 28th Division, 112th Regiment and was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart with Oak Leaf cluster. After the war he returned to his job at Speed Queen in Ripon. He obtained a private pilot’s license and enjoyed flying for many years. He also loved to hunt and fish. In the early 1950’s, he begin a business in cabinet making and later worked as a carpenter and locksmith with the Ripon College maintenance department. He retired in 1976.

Survivors include three daughters; Karen Cabral, San Antonio, TX, Lynda Gloyd and Greg Garrett, Dothan, AL and Lois Gloyd, Ripon, WI, a son; John (Carol) Gloyd of Colorado Springs, CO. He is also survived by a granddaughter, Abbie Gloyd of Ripon; and an adopted son, Robert Gloyd, New Mexico. He was preceded in death by his parents, six siblings, his wife Violet, a son, Timothy Williams Gloyd and an adopted daughter, Mary Catherine (Gloyd) Grothe.

Visitation will be Friday, July 23, 2004 from 4-7 p.m. at the Butzin-Marchant Funeral Home, Ripon. In lieu of a funeral, a graveside service with full military honors will be held on Saturday, July 24, 2004 at 4 p.m. at Woodlawn Cemetery, City of Ripon.

The family wishes to thank all the staff at Bethel Home in Oshkosh for their loving care over the years.
