Don Thomann

Don Frederick Thomann, age 84, died early Sunday morning, January 6, 2002, at his home.

He was born August 17, 1917, in Dixon, IL, the son of Frederick A. Thomann (deceased May, 1956) and Grace Louise Thomann (nee McMahon) (deceased April, 1986). He grew up and was educated in East Moline, IL, and attended the University of Chicago (AB Degree 1938; AM Degree 1941). He taught high school in Knoxville, IL from 1939-1942. He did military service in the US Army, 1942-1946; served in the United States and the Philippine Islands. Discharged with the rank of Captain in 1946.

Mr. Thomann attended the University of Illinois (1946-1948, obtained ED.D Degree in 1949). Principal of Jr./Sr. High School, Knoxville, IL (1948-1952); principal Sr. High School in Athens, OH (1952-1957). Summertime staff at Ohio University (1955-1956); served on state education committees in IL and OH.

Mr. Thomann was Professor of Education at Ripon College (1957-1982); Chairman of the Dept. of Education (1957-1975). While at Ripon College, established the Elementary Education Program and the Annual Student Exchange Program with the University College of Ripon and York St. John in Ripon and York, England. He retired in 1982, and lived in Ripon since retirement.

Mr. Thomann founded and was active in the Ripon College Retirement Group. He was a member of Ripon Noon Kiwanis Club since 1957 (an active Kiwanian since 1949). Member of First Congregational Church (UCC), Ripon Reader’s Theater and several bridge groups. Had done extensive travel in Europe (21 countries), Mexico, Canada (10 provinces) and all 50 States.

He married Beverly Mureen in Galesburg, IL in 1944 (deceased in 1986). He is survived by a daughter, Lee Ann Johnson of CA; one granddaughter, Erin Maguire of CA; younger sister, Elizabeth Ann Smith of Quincy, IL; Shiley and Robert Spenader (sister-in-law & husband) of Love’s park, IL; Edith Thomann (sister-in-law) of Webster Grove, MO; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins; and many friends, including James Leslie of Monticello, AR, and Dr. Michael Pierson, Medical Officer at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX. Preceding him in death were a daughter, Kathleen Louise Thomann (deceased in 1967); younger sister, Helen Louise Summers; his brother, Robert M. Thomann; and his brother-in-law, Orville J. Smith.

Memorial service for Mr. Don Thomann will be Saturday, January 12, 2002, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Congregational Church (UCC), Ripon. Inurnment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Ripon. Memorials to Hospice Hope/Central WI Branch, 114 N. Pearl St, Berlin, WI 54923.
