Donald Schultz

December 3, 1922 — November 17, 2008

Donald M. Schultz, 86, of Ripon and Green Lake, WI, passed away on Monday, November 17, 2008, at the Don and Marilyn Anderson Hospice Care Center in Madison, WI.

Don was born December 3, 1922, in the Town of Ripon, Fond du Lac County, WI, the third of five children born to Andrew and Nathalie Kenas Schultz. Don attended the “Little Red School House,” also known as the “Welsh Hill School,” on highway 49. He graduated from Green Lake High School in 1939. Don played sports, marched in the band and excelled academically. Don and his brother Marvin joined the Army on August 30, 1940. Don soon transferred to the newly created Army Air Corps. His aggressiveness and leadership abilities soon recognized, and he quickly promoted, becoming the youngest Staff Sargent and Acting 1st Sargent in the U.S. Air Force at age 18. He entered Flight School at age 19, graduated as a 2nd Lieutenant and became a Commissioned Pilot at 20 years of age. After completing his pilot’s training, Don was assigned to the Northwest Defense Force and stationed in Oregon. Later, he became part of the occupational forces of Okinawa. Don retired from active duty in 1948. He remained in the Air Force Reserve for 21 more years, retiring in 1969 with the rank of Lt. Colonel. He met his future wife in the summer of 1941, at Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis, MO. They married December 15, 1942, and began their family. In 1949, Don, Lee and the children moved to Portland, Oregon, where Don became a lumber buyer for the Edward Hines Lumber Company. While in Portland, he and his wife became active in the Masons, Eastern Star, PTA, volleyball and square dancing where Don was a caller. In 1956, Don and Lee returned to Wisconsin and purchased the family farm in the Town of Brooklyn, Green Lake County. Don actively farmed until 1963, at which time he became a Technical Representative for Speed Queen Company. Again his talents moved him rapidly up the ladder until he became the company’s International Technical Representative. In this capacity, Don traveled the world, from Europe to Australia, from South Africa to the Far East, providing service training for Speed Queen products. He retired in 1988. He remained active in the Masonic Lodge and became a 32nd degree Shriner in the Zor Temple, Madison, WI. He sang with Barbershop choruses and church choirs both in Florida and Wisconsin. He enjoyed playing golf, was an avid reader, followed football, and loved gadgets and old tools.
The couple spent their winters in Florida from 1988 until Lee’s death in 2004. Don then moved to the American House in Ripon, Wisconsin.

He is survived by his brother, Kent and his wife Donna Jean Schultz of Houston, Texas; his children: Donna L. Healey, Warminister, Pa, Sandra K. Roesch and husband Ford, Kansas City, MO, and Drew Schultz and partner Terrell Brock, Madison, WI; six grandchildren and their spouses; 12 great grandchildren as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
