Dorothy "Shy" Mccarthy

Dorothy “Shy” (Shikoski) McCarthy, age 80, of Cape Coral, FL and summer resident of Green Lake, died Monday evening, August 23, 1999, at Ripon Medical Center. Her favorite place on earth was Green Lake.

She was born August 19, 1919, in Green Lake, the daughter of Fred and Magdeline (Dugenski) Shikoski. She graduated from Green Lake High School and St. Agnes School of Nursing in Fond du Lac. She was a Lt in the US Army during WWII, and was decorated three times and received the Air Medal w/Oak Leaf Cluster. She received the Air Medal for risking her life in trying to save a Marine navigator in a plane crash. Dorothy was the first American woman in the first group of air evacuation women flight nurses to set foot on the island of New Georgia in the South Pacific.

On September 27, 1945, she married Edward F. McCarthy. She was a member of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Green Lake, and was involved with Hospice Support in FL.

Dorothy was known throughout her life for being a loving wife and mother, and was loved by all for her bright smiIe and lively nature. Her entire life reflects in giving of herself, and her happiness was in making others happy. She loved to play practical jokes, blow air horns and drive around Green Lake in an old red pickup, honking the horn. She greatly loved her family and friends. Dorothy loved entertaining, canning, and doing the polka.

She is survived by her children, Edward (Karen) MaCarthy and children, Robbie & Jeremy, and John (Debbie) McCarthy, all of Cape Coral, FL, Jim McCarthy of Fort Meyers, FL, and Bob McCarthy of N. Fort Meyers, FL and his children, Davinee, Willie and Andy, and granddaughters, Lydia, and Kathy Smith of Green Lake and her children, Danielle and Emily Smith, and Paul Van Kauwenberg of Orlando, FL. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ed “Mac” McCarthy, grandson, August DeForest Zebediah Smith, 2 brothers, Charles and John; and 4 sisters, Eleanor, Anna, Mary and Agnes.

Visitation will be Wednesday, August 25, 1999, from 5 until 7 PM, with a Rosary at 7 PM, at the Butzin-Marchant Funeral Home, Ripon. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Green Lake on Thursday, August 26, 1999, at 10 AM with the Rev. John R. Dowd officiating. Friends may also call at the church from 9:30 AM until the time of the service. Interment will be in Dartford Cemetery, Green Lake. Memorials to the American Diabetes Association.

Dorothy’s faith was so great, and was a living example that faith can get you through anything. She will always be remembered for living life to the fullest. Her caring, loving nature will shine on through all the lives she touched.
