Dr. Douglas Edward Toll, age 82, of Frankfurt, Germany, grew up in Ripon and went on to become an internationally respected Orthodontist. He passed away on Saturday, September 29, 2012, from cancer, surrounded by his family and professional friends.

Dr. Douglas Toll was born January 31st, 1930 in Fond Du Lac, WI, to Edward and Mildred (Schattschneider) Toll who were longtime residents of Ripon. His mother later became Mrs. Herman Wilke. His Father, Edward later married Marie Kafer, who taught school in Ripon for many years. His Uncle, Fred Toll, was also a teacher in Ripon. Another Uncle, Carroll Schattschneider, was a Ripon Police Officer, whose wife Dorothy Laboyeske was also a teacher and still resides in Ripon. Four generations of the family attended Our Saviour’s United Church of Christ. Prayers for Dr. Toll have been offered by the congregation at the bequest of The Reverend Gerald Schrankler and Reverend Gary Miller.

As he grew up he attended Boy Scouts of America. Young Douglas rose to the rank of Eagle Scout locally. He graduated from Ripon High School in the class of 1948 as class President. He served in the United States Army Air Force as a dentist. He was stationed in Morocco where he learned to ski in the Atlas Mountains. He was also Captain of the Air Force Ski Team. He later had the opportunity in Pforzheim, Germany to travel and study the country from where his forefathers emigrated. Douglas came to appreciate the people and the surrounding culture. He traveled extensively in the military and following his discharge, settled in Palos Verdes Estates, California where he established a dental practice. As his interest in Orthodontics began to develop he returned to the Midwest to earn his Master’s degree in Orthodontics at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Returning to Germany, his specialization and expertise in Orthodontics provided him many opportunities to travel and lecture on every continent except Antarctica. His practice in Bad Soden, Germany grew to international status. As an officer in the United States Air Force reserves, he had special opportunities to serve. He was called in following the Iranian hostage release to examine the dental condition of the recently released hostages. His practice also included American Military dependents as well as the International Business Community in Germany.
