Dr. Erwin Breithaupt

Dr. Erwin M. Breithaupt, age 70, of Ripon, WI, passed away on Tuesday, August 6, 1991, at his home.

He was born November 12, 1920, in Columbus, OH, a son of Erwin and Lillian Millard Breithaupt. He graduated from Miami University in Ohio in 1942. He was a member of the Ranger Division during World War II with the U.S. Army. He received a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He received his Masters and Doctorates of Philosophy and Art at Ohio State University. From 1946 until 1947, he was an Art Instructor at Otterbrein College. The years of 1947 until 1962, he served as an Associate Professor of Art and Philosophy at the University of Georgia in Athens. From 1962 until his retirement in 1983, Dr. Breithaupt acted as Chairman of the Art Department of Ripon College.

He was a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Delta Phi Delta, and Georgia Academy of Science, Who’s Who in America, the College Art Association, and the American Society of Aesthetics. In 1967, he was voted Outstanding Professor of the Year at Ripon College. He served an Appointment to the Summer Institute of Humanistic Discussions in Science at oak Ridge Institute of Nuclear Studies in 1963. He received the Severy Award given for outstanding teaching in 1965. In addition to many published articles and papers, Dr. Breithaupt authored several books. Among them are The Creative Life of Man, Aesthetics – An Institutional Approach, and Guernica- Picasso: An Institutional Case Study.

He was Director and Co-Producer of a Design Exhibition which represented the Department of Art which was shown at the Chicago Merchandise Mart.

During his years in Ripon, Dr. Breithaup acted as President of the Ripon Community Art Center and was a member of its Board of Directors. He served on the Executive Board of Fond du Lac County Democratic Party from 1968-1969, was a Regional Member and was a Representative of the Wisconsin Arts Foundation. He had three paintings exhibited by invitation in “The States” Exhibition in Green Bay in 1965. He organized the only Centennial Exhibition to celebrate the birth of Frank Lloyd Wright. He has exhibited many of his paintings in various galleries throughout the United States. He worked for Habitat for Humanity, was a member of the Peace and Justice Group of Newman Center at Las Cruces, NM, and was Co-Director with Jerry Thompson for the Ripon Upward Bound Program.

He is survived by his wife, the former Helen “Bess” Artley; three daughters, Bonnie Freiheit of Waukesha, Anne Donnelly- Rieke of New Ulm, MN, and Margaret Merriman of Golden Valley, MN; one son, Dick A. Donnelly of Minnetonka, MN; eight grandchildren; four brothers; two sisters, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Eleanor Averill Breithaupt and his parents.

Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 9, 1991 at the Martin Luther King Room of Harwood Union at Ripon College. A memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, at the Great hall of Harwood Union with the Reverend Jerry Thompson officiating. Interment will follow in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Ripon. A memorial in his name will be established for the Art Addition of the Fine Arts Building at Ripon College.
