Dr. James Barbour

November 5, 1910 — April 10, 2009

Dr. James Humphrey Barbour, 98, passed away at Kindred Hearts of Green Lake on Friday, April 10, 2009, following a long and fruitful life. Born to Harris Barbour and Bessie Drew Barbour on November 5, 1910, in Walleston, Massachusetts, he was the oldest of four children. The family moved to Wisconsin in 1913, settling in Ripon by 1922. Jim graduated from Ripon High School and Ripon College with Majors in physics, chemistry, and biology.

He married Inez Cecile Sackett in 1931, and after spending some time in graduate school, made a decision to enter medical school. Dr. Barbour studied anesthesiology and ultimately became head of his anesthesiology department. Dr. Barbour was father to a son, Samuel Marston Barbour, who survives him. A daughter, Cyprian Keyes Barbour Toland, preceded him in death, as did his wife of 40 years, “Bertie” Sackett. Vivian Katherine Eberle came into his life in the early 70’s and the two married in 1972, and enjoyed traveling and socializing with friends until her death in 1999. In addition to his son Samuel, Dr. Barbour is survived by 6 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild. He is also survived by a sister, Jane Lockwood of Keene, New Hampshire; a favorite cousin, Barbara Jones, of Keene, New Hampshire; and a brother-in-law, Lawrence Vandervelde of Green Lake.

Dr. Barbour will be remembered for his commitment to medicine, his philanthropic work with institutions and charities, and his strong sense of independence in spirit of challenges he faced in his later years.

A gathering in remembrance of his life will take place on Sunday, June 14, 2009, at 4:00 p.m. at the Heidel House in Green Lake. Memorial gifts can be directed to Father Carr’s Place, 1965 Oshkosh Ave, Oshkosh, WI 54902.
