Dr. Richard L. Carley, age 81, of Ripon, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Friday, September 19, 2008.
Dr. Richard Carley was born on May 5, 1927, in Berlin, WI, the son of Leon and Thelma Carley and Harry Luetke. He was educated in Berlin and Ripon and graduated from Ripon High School, attended Ripon College, and graduated from Marquette University Dental School in 1953. Dr. Rich practiced general dentistry in Ripon for 37 years. He was a member of OKU, Honorary Dental Fraternity, a life member of the Wisconsin and American Dental Association, Past President of Ripon Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow, Past President of the Ripon District School Board, Past President of the Ripon Police and Fire Commission. He served on the Heartland Chapter of Ducks Unlimited Committee for many years and was a member of the NRA. He was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He was a dedicated volunteer at Ripon Medical Center for many years. He served in the U.S. Navy- W.W. II and was a member of the American Legion. He was an ardent sportsman and loved golfing, hunting, fishing, and woodworking.
He married Arlene M. Splitt on August 28, 1948, in Ripon who preceded him in death in 1993. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Shirley Jahnke, and granddaughter, Danielle Carley. He is survived by his wife, Naomi Kelm Carley, whom he married in 1994. He is also survived by 4 children, Jeff (Pat) Carley of Frederic, Chris Adams of St. Louis, MO, Caryl (Scott) Doberstein of LaCrosse, and Ted (Loraine) Carley of Ripon; 7 grandchildren, Toby (Tammy) Carley, Philip and Joy (Carley) Hughes, Kylie, Kami and Kellan Doberstein, and Cassie and Erin Carley; 5 great grandchildren, Molly and Maggie Carley, and Noah, Mason, and Jackson Hughes, and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by 4 stepchildren, Sherry (Bill) Glen of Apex, N.C., Douglas (Kathy) Kelm of Ripon, Kathy Meinke of Madison, and Richard (Karen) Kelm of Ripon; 12 step-grandchildren, Dean Glen, Christine (James) Parker, Devin (Kelly) Brownlow, Damien (Michelle) Brownlow, David (Chris) Kelm, Dan (Erin) Kelm, Abe and Caleb Meinke, Samantha (Mike) Garvey, Ian (Sandra) Meinke and Aaron and Rebecca Kelm; 5 step great-grandchildren, Ty and Juliene Brownlow, Miles Brownlow, Owen Kelm and Zachary Kelm.
Visitation for Dr. Richard L. Carley will be held on Sunday, September 21, 2008 from 2:00-6:00 p.m. at Butzin-Marchant Funeral Home and again on Monday, September 22, 2008 from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, 222 Blossom St. Ripon.
Mass of Christian Burial for Dr. Richard L. Carley will be held on Monday, September 22, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church with Father Robert Fictum officiating. Interment will be held in St. Patrick Cemetery, Ripon. A memorial has been established.
