Dr. Terrence Hayes

June 27, 1925 — April 23, 2013

Dr. Terrence Anthony Hayes, age 87, of Green Lake, WI, went home to his heavenly reward, passing peacefully at his home on April 23, 2013, after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.

Terrence was born on June 27, 1925, in Cumberland, WI, the son of Frank and Mary (Endejan) Hayes. He attended Cumberland High School and River Falls Normal College (now University of Wisconsin-River Falls) and graduated with a B.S. degree. He went on to obtain his Doctorate from Northern, IL, College of Optometry in Chicago in 1951. He spent two years in the United States Army and served in the Korean War. He was stationed in Whittier, AK. After an honorable discharge from the army he started an Optometry Practice in Hales Corners, WI, where he practiced for 35 years. On April 12, 1958, he married Joyce Shurpit in Shorewood, WI. They lived in Hales Corners where they raised four children. Dr. Hayes was an active member of the Hales Corners’ Community. He belonged to the Business and Professional Men’s Club, was the Charter President of the Hales Corners’ Lions Club, a member of the Hales Corners’ Police and Fire Commission, and an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. . In 1992 he moved to Green Lake and established a part-time practice where he served patients for seven years.

Terrence was very enthusiastic about his profession and was an active member of the Kettle Moraine Optometric Association, Wisconsin Optometric Association and the American Optometric Association. He served in various offices and subsequently served as President of the Wisconsin Optometric Association. He was appointed by Governor Warren Knowles to the Wisconsin State Board of Examiners and served as its president for several years. In 1977 he was named “Wisconsin Optometrist of the Year” by his peers.

He was an active member of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Green Lake, WI, the American Legion Post 306, and the Lake Winnebago Optometric Society. His interests were many. He loved to sing and became accustomed to singing before an audience when he was still in grade school with his sister Rosie as a coach. He sang and cantered in church and also sang in the Bel Canto Choir with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. His quick Irish wit and humor were endearing to his friends and family. We will all miss his warmth, generosity, jovial and caring personality. The love and care for his family was a priority. He had a great passion for hunting and fishing, working on his home and property. He had a great sense of adventure and enjoyed traveling. Travels included much of the United States, Canada and Alaska in his motor home with his wife Joyce. They also enjoyed world travel and visited numerous continents by land and sea. Terry was a devout and wonderful man, friend to many and will be dearly missed by all.

He is survived by his beloved wife Joyce of 55 years and his four children, two sons and two daughters: Tim (Therese) Hayes of Laguna Beach, CA; Brook (Ann) Hayes of Cross Plains WI; Kelly (Tim) Mlinar of Elkhorn, WI; and Ann (Chris) Stecker of Arvada, CO; and 9 grandchildren: Jennifer LaTour, Matthew and Jeremy Hayes, Christine, Jonathon, Sarah and Benjamin Mlinar, Erin and Kate Stecker. He is further survived by his brother John (Hildegarde “Hupp”) and four brothers-in-law: Ervin (Nancy) Shurpit, Bernard Shurpit, Eugene Brudnowski, Jack Wilder, and numerous nieces and nephews, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, two brothers and their spouses: Dolores “Dee” (Sy) Becker, Rosamund (Vern) Ploetz, Sheila (Cliff) Baker, William (Shirley) Hayes, Frank (Beverly) Hayes and two sisters-in-law: Darlene Brudnowski and Diana Wilder.

There will be a rosary said for him Friday, April 26, 2013 at 3:45 pm at Butzin-Marchant Funeral Home, 515 Mayparty Dr., Ripon, WI, 54971 with a visitation to follow at 4-7 pm at Butzin-Marchant Funeral Home and again on Saturday, April 27, 2013 from 9:30-10:30 am at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church 530 Ruth Street, Green Lake, WI 54941.

Mass of Christian Burial for Dr. Terrence Hayes will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2013 at 10:30 am at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church. Father Philip Krogman will officiate. Interment will follow at St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery, Town of Ripon, WI with full military honors.
