Earle Scott

October 16, 1922 — July 9, 2002

Earle S. Scott, 79, Ripon, died at Parkview Care Center on Tuesday, July 9, 2002.

He was born October 16, 1922, in Bellingham, WA, son of Harold (Pete) and Myrtle (Billie) Bagley Scott. He grew up in Saskatchewan, Canada, and moved back to the United States in 1937. He joined the navy in July 1941 and served 52 months in the naval hospital corps, mostly in the South Pacific. He married Joy Barbara Hegg on April 23, 1944, in Aberdeen, WA.

He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Reed College in Portland, OR, in 1949, and received his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Illinois in 1952. He taught at the University of California-Berkely and at Amherst College before coming to Ripon College in 1962. He retired in 1987 and was awarded an honorary degree by Ripon College in 2001.

His entire life was devoted to education, working not only with college students but with teachers and pupils in the public schools. Many of his summers were devoted to teaching in institutes for high school science teachers in Ripon and around the country. He was instrumental in starting the ACE program at Ripon College and taught in it several times. He served two terms on the Ripon School Board and since his retirement he had been active as a volunteer in the local schools, primarily at Murray Park Elementary School, where he sought to improve the quality of science education. In 1991 he received the Friend of Education Award from the Ripon Education Association.

He stopped his volunteer work in the schools in 1999 because of health problems, but he continued to be active as the gardener for the Ripon Historical Society and served on their board until his placement in the nursing home in October 2001.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara, and his seven children, Brian Scott, Cleveland, OH; Leslie Scott, Columbus, OH; Patty Scott Lewis, Eau Claire, WI; David (Dana) Scott, Ripon; Stuart (Catherine) Scott, Glen Rock, NJ; Michael (Catherine) Scott, East Lansing, MI; and Barbara Scott, Ripon. He is also survived by his eight grandchildren and by nephews, nieces, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother and sister.

A celebration of his life will be announced at a later time. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Ripon College in his name.
