Edgar W. Sherman, 78, of 591 Highland Dr. Waupaca, formerly of Ripon, died February 2, 1994, at St. Michaels Hospital in Stevens Point.
He was born February 17, 1915, in Oshkosh, a son to the late Louis and Ada (Ward) Sherman. He was a graduate of the University of Milwaukee and received his Masters from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In 1942, he assumed the job as band director at Ripon High School. From 1943 until 1945, Edgar served his country in the official United States Air Force Band. After returning to Ripon in 1945, he served as a math teacher and principal of the Ripon Middle School for many years. Edgar was active in many Ripon civic activities. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Ripon, a chairman of the church trustees and a deacon of the church. He was chairman of the organ procurement committee and was instrumental in helping with the church music program. He was a member of the Oshkosh Civic Symphony Orchestra and the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. Edgar was an active member of the Ripon Lions Club, serving as secretary for 25 years and as their president for several years. He was founder of the Veterans of Middle School Club, for retired teachers. Edgar was an accomplished bassoonist and for many years of his life, he was actively involved in the manufacturing of custom bassoon reeds.
Survivors include his wife, Florence Spooner whom he married on December 31, 1936. In addition, one daughter, Mary Sherman Kearl of Waupaca; 2 granddaughters, Lindsay and Paige Kearl; and 1 brother, Orville Sherman of California survives. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers and 2 sisters.
Funeral services for Edgar Sherman will be held Saturday at 3:00 p.m. at the First Congregational Church in Ripon, with the Reverend Harley C.W. Tretow officiating. Interment will be at a later date in the Lake Maria Cemetery, Town of Manchester.
Friends may call from 2 p.m. until the hour of the services at the church. A memorial as been established in his name for the continuation of music studies for his granddaughters.
