Edward Klingbail

March 6, 1924 — February 8, 2004

Edward F. “Ed” Klingbail, Jr., age 79, responded to the final call to duty on an unknown shore on Sunday, February 8, 2004. His death followed a ruptured abdominal aneurysm suffered three days previously. He was at Theda Clark Medical Center in Neenah.

Ed was the first born son of Edward F. Sr. and Frieda (von Schoenberg) Klingbail on March 6, 1924. He lived in Ripon his entire life, graduating from Ripon High School in 1942. He entered the U.S. Army in 1943, and after a brief stay at Ripon College under the ASTP program, was transferred to England and thence to France shortly after the Normandy invasion. He spent extended highly hazardous duty as a truck driver in the famed “Redball Express” speeding ammunition, gasoline and other supplies to the rapidly advancing American forces.

On return to Ripon, he spent time in the Wisconsin National Guard, and a caretaker of the Ripon armory. Following a stint as a long-haul truck driver, he was employed as a mail carrier. Ed later appointed Assistant Postmaster, a position from which he retired. He then went to work part-time for Ripon Ford-Mercury. He was a member of Our Saviour’s United Church of Christ.

Ed was an avid motorcyclist and was a member of the Honda Gold Wings and the Retreads. He was known for keeping his vehicles in impeccably immaculate condition. He was also a dedicated member of the Schultz-Klemp-Wentland Post #5278 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was united in marriage to Marvis Stollfuss in November 1957, and she preceded him in death on January 19, 1999. He was subsequently married to Doris Alf who preceded him in death on June 14, 2001.

He is survived by 1 brother, Kermit N. (Joyce) Klingbail of West Leyden, New York; sister, Joyce Klingbail Haff of East Boothbay, Maine; special niece, Tamara (Terry) Liptow of Ripon; other nieces and nephews; and special friend, Darlene Doiel. He was preceded in death by parents; and his great-niece, Brenda.

A graveside service at Woodlawn Cemetery in Ripon will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, February 12, 2004, with Rev. Mark R. West officiating. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established. There will be no visitation.
