Elizabeth Harris

Elizabeth “Bette” Harris, formerly of Ripon, died April 29, 1995 at her home in Coldwater, MI.

Bette was born May 27, 1920 in Coldwater, the daughter of the late Clare E. and Ada M. (Camp) Wise. Raised in Coldwater, Bette graduated from Coldwater High School in 1938. She earned a degree in music from Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, MD and returned to Coldwater where she taught music in Hillsdale College.

She moved to Arkansas for a few years and that is where she married David L. Harris in August of 1950. In the late 1950’s they moved to Ripon where her husband was Dean of Men at Ripon College. While he was Dean of Men at the college, Bette was active in many faculty activities. She played the organ and directed the choir at St Peter’s Episcopal Church, Ripon and also gave private organ and piano lessons. Dean Harris died Sept. 23, 1983. Mrs. Harris returned to Coldwater in 1986. She was a member of the Fortnightly Music Club and St Mark’ s Episcopal Church, Coldwater, and St Peter’ s Episcopal Church, Ripon.

She is survived by 1 sister, Margaret “Peggy” Petersen, 9 nieces and nephews. She was loved and respected by all of her relatives, and was known more as a grandmother to her nieces and nephews than an aunt. She was preceded in death by her husband and 2 brothers.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 A.M. Wednesday, May 3, at St Peter’s Episcopal Church. The Reverend Robert J.C. Brown will officiate and burial will follow in Garden of the Cross Cemetery, Ripon. There will be no visitation.
