Erna Minna Else (Retzlaff) VanKirk, 87, of Ripon died Friday evening January 19, 1996, at Parkview Care Center, Ripon, WI where she resided since Dec. 1, 1995.
On Feburary 19, 1908 Erna was born the daughter of Otto (Sr.) and Emma (Gherke) Retzlaff in rural Pickett, WI. Erna married Gilbert VanKirk on October 2, 1943 in Ripon where they farmed for many years. She attended Outlet School in rural Pickett and graduated from Ripon Senior High School in 1927. She than attended Oshkosh Business College for 1 year. Erna worked in the office of Speed Queen Mfg. Co. in Ripon for 18 years and also did book work for Vincent Schmitt for 5 years. She was a very active member of Our Saviour’s United Church of Christ in Ripon all her life, Adams School Booster Club, Royal Neighbors, Fond du Lac County Farm Bureau, Charter Member Twin “R” Homemakers, AARP of Ripon, Church Women United, and Friendship Card Club of Ripon.
Erna is survived by her husband Gilbert; one niece, Lorraine (Earl) Fisher, and their family, Kenneth Fisher of Ripon, Calvin (Sandy) Fisher and their children Katherine and Abigal of Ripon, Karen (William) Denckert and their children Joshua and Mark of Freeport, IL.; one sister, Elsie (Gordon) Peschke of Ripon; one brother, Wilbert (Gladys) Retzlaff of Cranden< WI.; three sisters inlaws, Dora (Otto) Retzlaff Jr. at Parkview Care Center, Florence VanKirk of Ripon, an nep ews. She is preceded in death by her parents, 5 sisters, Martha Kunst, Alma Stark, Frieda Retzlaff, Nora Schwandt, Emma Retzlaff; and 6 brothers, Alfred Retzlaff, Otto Ret Jr., Henry Retzlaff, Harry Retzlaff, and Fred Retzlaff.
Friends may call Monday, January 22, 1996, from 4-7:30 p.m. at the Butzin0Marchant Funeral Home in Ripon.
Funeral services for Erna will be Tuesday, January 23, 1996, at 11:00 a.m. with a one hour visitation before the service. The Reverend James D. Mohr will officiate. Burial will follow in the Liberty Prairie Cemetery in Pickett, WI. A memorial has been established for Our Saviour’s United Church of Christ in Ripon.
