Fred J. Foersterling Poppo, age 67, died peacefully in his sleep at his cottage, on August 28th , 2008, after a long battle with brain cancer that he faced with characteristic courage, humor, and grace.
Fred was born on November 30, 1940, in Windsor, Ontario Canada and resided in the Green Lake, Wisconsin area for the past 3 years, coming from Barrington, Illinois. He was the beloved son of Nathalene Foersterling and the late Jack Foersterling. Fred graduated from York High School, Elmhurst, Illinois in 1958 and then went on to Lawrence University, where he was member and vice-president of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity and earned a Bachelor of Arts with majors in math and art. On August 17, 1963, Fred married his high school sweetheart, Pat Keane. He spent most of his professional career as a pilot for Eastern Airlines, earning the rank of captain aboard DC-9 and 727 aircraft before retiring in 1988. He was then elected for three consecutive terms as Assessor of Cuba Township in Illinois. Known for his fairness and integrity, Fred was instrumental in getting legislation passed that equalized the tax burden between Lake and Cook Counties. His commitment to the community also included service as President and Land Steward of Citizens for Conservation, Vice President of Barrington Area Development Council, Trustee Chairman and Diaconate member of Community Church of Barrington, and Director of North Barrington Area Association.
Freds lasting legacy of love include his devoted wife of 45 years, Pat Mommo; children Karen (Steve) Tardrew, James (Mary) Foersterling, John (Kelly) Foersterling; grandchildren Kelsey, Jack, Sydney, Thomas, Sean, Patrick, Marielle, and Charlie; brother Robert (Janice) Foersterling; sister Susan (David) Ardapple; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A private burial, attended by family, was held at Dartford Cemetery, Green Lake, Wisconsin on August 31, 2008. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 14, 2008 at Community Church of Barrington, 407 South Grove, Barrington, Illinois with Reverend Robert Reekie officiating.
