George Fitzwater

George Elmer Fitzwater, Jr, age 78, of 433 W Oshkosh St, Ripon, died Tuesday morning, June 24, 2003, at Michalene’s in Ripon.

He was born February 10, 1925, in Greenville, Texas, a son to George Elmer and Margaret (Van Sickle) Fitzwater, Sr. He was educated in Corpus Christi, Texas. George entered the U.S. Army in 1943, and served in the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign during WWII and in the Army of Occupation in Germany. He served in the Korean Conflict and was an army escort. After spending twenty years in the military, he retired in 1963 as a Master Sergeant. On June 21, 1954, he married Audra L. Crowell in Battle Creek, Michigan. He was a police officer for the City of Ripon from 1963-1969, and then worked in the maintenance department at Ripon College until his retirement in 1987. George was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church and the Ripon V.F.W. Post #5278, and was an avid stamp and coin collector.

Survivors include his wife, Audra of Ripon; children, Candace Fitzwater, Mark (Susan) Fitzwater and Suzie (Jeff) Fude, all of Ripon; grandchildren, Cory Kwakkel of Ripon, Andrew (Tammy) Hansen of Franklin, WI, Crystal Fitzwater of Ripon, Jason & Heather Fude of Ripon; great-grandchildren, Melanie, Jacob and Sarah Hansen of Franklin. He is further survived by sisters, Lela M. Travis and Ethel L. Griffith, both of Corpus Christi, Texas; and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents and infant brother.

A Mass of the Resurrection Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 27, 2003, at St Peter’s Episcopal Church with Reverend Kenneth Guy officiating. The family will receive friends in the Undercroft following the service. A memorial has been established in his name.

The family would like to express appreciation to Ripon Medical Center, Ripon Police Department and Guardian Ambulance Service, Michalene’s, Affinity Home Health Care, Hospice Hope/Berlin, and Dr. David Rich and staff from Affinity Medical Group.
