George Mockus, Sr.

February 24, 1921 — August 8, 2007

George A. Mockus Sr., 86, of Green Lake, WI, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on Wednesday, August 8, 2007 surrounded by his loving family.

George was born on February 24, 1921 the son of Peter and Louise (Genunzio) Mockus in Gastra, MI. He graduated from High School in Kenosha, and upon his 21st birthday, joined the U. S. Air Force. George served his time in Service as Crew Chief of a P47 Fighter Group, and for 3 ½ years served missions in England, France and Germany during WWII. Upon returning home to Kenosha, George married Lucille Peck on November 27, 1947. George then embarked upon a 50 year career in the Restaurant Industry which started by becoming a partner with his father-in-law to own the Bel Air Restaurant in Green Lake, WI. In 1968, George and Lucille purchased Norton’s Restaurant, which he owned until his retirement in 1982, which he sold to his sons, George Jr. and Peter. After his retirement, George spent his time golfing, boating and playing chess with his grand-children, Marla and Amanda. George spent the winter months in his Florida condo since 1965. He was a Charter Member of the Green Lake Lion’s Club, and an active member of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church. George received the Melvin Jones Fellow Award for his dedicated humanitarian services for Lions Club International. George’s former golfing buddies and his many bar patrons at Bel Air and Norton’s have a treasure trove of memories over the years, but none more special than those shared by George and Lucille and their family members who provided the community with great food and conversation for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Lucille Mockus, two sons; Peter (fiancé Jean Bunkelmann) and George Jr. (Robyn), three daughters; Tina (John) Bernardi of Chicago, Patricia (Robert) Vorbau of Milwaukee, and Mary Mockus and Cheryl Lueschen of Ripon, a grandson; Mario Bernardi of Chicago, and three granddaughters; Marla Mockus of Oshkosh, Amanda Dille of Fond du Lac, and Cortney Gumbleton of CA.
