Georgia Houlihan

March 22, 1912 — October 3, 1999

Georgia Houlihan, 87, formerly of Ripon, died October 3, 1999 in LaCrosse, after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.

She was born Georgia Lennis Whitt, the daughter of George and Augusta, on March 22, 1912, in Gallatin, MO. She graduated from Gallatin High School and completed a brief teaching course at Northwest Missouri State Teachers College in Maryville, MO. In 1932 she married Patrick V. Houlihan of Kansas City in Lexington, MO. They lived in Missouri and Illinois while Mr. Houlihan pursued his interest in retailing. Mr. and Mrs. Houlihan moved to Oshkosh in 1946. In 1948, Mr. Houlihan established Patrick’s, Distinctive Store for Women, in Ripon. The Houlihans operated the store together until Mr. Houlihan’s incapacitating illness in 1960. Mrs. Houlihan continued the business alone until her retirement in 1972.

As one of the founders of her junior high library, she collected and cataloged 490 books. She enjoyed visiting and utilizing libraries throughout her life. She was an accomplished pianist and won state awards throughout her schooling. She also played for her church and the local movie theater when she was a young woman. In her later years, she participated in the Ten O’clock Scholars class at Ripon College. She volunteered as a helper at the Little White School House, the birthplace of the Republican Party.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, J. Patrick and Judy (Jenz) Houlihan of Wichita, KS; a daughter, Jane Houlihan of LaCrosse; grandson, S. Patrick Houlihan of Wichita; two sisters, Vera Stokesberry of Aurora, IL, and Mary Margaret Kritser of Hemet, CA; many loving nieces and nephews; also long time care provider and good friend, Roxanna Morgan of LaCrosse. She was preceded in death by her husband, Patrick, in 1966; one sister, Iva Worley; as well as, three brothers, Owen, Forrest, and Jack Whitt; and her parents.

Visitation will begin at 10 AM on Wednesday, October 6, 1999, at St Patrick Church in Ripon where Mr. and Mrs. Houlihan were members. The Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11 AM. Interment will follow at St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery, Town of Ripon. In lieu of flowers, the family has established a memorial with the Ripon Public Library, 120 Jefferson St.
