Harlen Travis, age 93, of Marquette, WI, passed away on Saturday, December 15, 2012, at Markesan Resident Home in Markesan.
Harlen was born on September 26, 1919, in Paris, IL, and after graduating from high school; he rode the rails finding work wherever he could. He married the love of his life, Mildred Kouba on May 4, 1944. They were married for just short of 65 years. Harlen was the most devoted husband, passionately caring for his wife until she died in March of 2009. Harlen joined the Air Force during World War II as a mechanic. His passion for small fighter planes stayed with him for the rest of his life. To the day he died he could tell you every little detail about the planes that he worked on. After leaving the service, Harlen went to Elgin Watch Makers School and became a jeweler. He and Millie owned a jewelry store in Freeport, IL. Harlen then went to work for Micro Switch in quality control.
Harlen was a member of the Masons for 52 years. He was also a Shriner, a longtime member of the EAA and of the American Legion.
He was also one of the best fiddlers around and member of the former Marquette Strings and Southern Wisconsin Old Time Fiddlers. Harlen, Jim Payne, Ken Paskey and Marv Nielsen were known to jam for hours at a time. After Mildreds death he wrote a letter saying, When my time comes I will join her. What a wonderful reunion we will have.
Survivors include his nephews, Bruce (Joyce) Travis of Terre Haute, IN; Jim Kouba of St. Petersburg, FL; nieces, Pam (Jim) White of Seminole, FL and Linda (life-long partner, Lynda Thompson) Dorse of Petaluma, CA. He is also survived by best friends, Jim Payne, Ken and Bonnie Paskey all of Markesan, WI, Nancy Schweder of Marquette, WI and Marv and Mary Anne Nielsen of Wautoma. Harlen is preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Mildred.
Visitation for Harlen will be held on Saturday, December 22, 2012, from 10 11:00 am at Butzin-Marchant Funeral Home, 515 Mayparty Dr., Ripon, WI 54971.
Funeral service for Harlen will be held on Saturday, December 22, 2012, at 11:00 am at Butzin-Marchant Funeral Home in Ripon. Reverend Paul Yoder will officiate. Interment will follow at Grand View Cemetery in the Village of Marquette with Full Military Honors. Memorials may be directed to Wisconsin Parkinson Association, 945 North 12th St., Milwaukee, WI 53233.
Harlen lived for many years in the Town of Marquette and recently at the Markesan Residence Home where he received such wonderful and compassionate care.
He was loved by all who met him and was known as a compassionate and caring man.
