He learned from the bottom up, becoming a journeyman meat cutter, meat market manager, WI/MN territory manager, and efficiency analyst before purchasing The Grocery Bag in Green Lake in 1982. As owner of the Grocery Bag for 20 years, he hired and mentored countless high school kids, often in their first jobs

Jim married high school sweetheart, Sue Vandervelde in 1964 and then raised two children: Tracy (Tom) Radenz of Wausau and Amy (Tim) Kobs of Trempealeau. Sister-in-law, Janika Vandervelde and Larry Fuchsberg reside in Minnesota. Jim’s parents, Arthur and Lucille Zierzow, preceded him in death.

Jim loved the outdoors. He could identify spring wildflowers, bird calls, animal tracks and regularly went morel mushroom hunting each spring. He loved sports, played and watched football, basketball, baseball, and golf. He was a hunter and fisherman. His family will remember him best as one who was patient, worked hard, didn’t complain, and demonstrated his character with his actions more profoundly than his words.
