Jane Haseltine

December 11, 1919 — March 7, 2003

Jane Brooks Haseltine, originally from Green Lake, passed away peacefully at the age of 83 in Redlands, California on March 7, 2003. Jane is survived by her husband, Dr. Charles P. Haseltine, and her children, Mary Haseltine Harder, Margaret (Miki) Kelsik-Haseltine, and Richard Brooks Haseltine. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at the First Congregational Church in Redlands, California, on Wednesday, March 12, 2003 at 11:00 a.m.

Born in Green Lake in 1919, the second of 5 children, Jane was raised in the Brooks family home, which used to stand at the corner of Mill and South Streets, near the center of town. She was the valedictorian of her high school class. The Great Depression shattered her dreams of attending college. Work to help support her family was a necessity, and she proceeded to distinguish herself in a variety of jobs in Green Lake, Ripon, Fond du Lac and Madison.

The great passion of Jane’s life was music. She was a highly accomplished musician, playing the clarinet, saxophone, piano and organ. She directed the choir of the Congregational Church, started boys and girls choirs at the Green Lake High School, and helped establish music programs at Lawsonia (now The American Baptist Assembly). In 1946, she was granted a scholarship to attend the Westminister Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey.

In the early 1950’s Jane met and was courted by Dr. Charles P. (Tip) Haseltine of Ripon. Dr. Haseltine had returned to Wisconsin following four years of service in the Pacific Theater with the NAVY and MARINE CORPS. Tip and Jane were married in 1952, and moved their new family to Redlands, California. There Jane continued her choir work at the First Congregational Church of Redlands, and spent sunny and happy years raising her family. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Jane Brooks Haseltine will be interred at the Haseltine family plot at Hillside Cemetery, Ripon, on Saturday, March 15, 2003 at 1 p.m. Family and friends are invited to attend. Memorials may be made to any charity of choice.

Butzin-Marchant Funeral Home, Ripon, is assisting the family.
