John Geer

John F. Geer, age 68, of Ripon, passed away on Wednesday afternoon, June 15, 2005 at Hilltop Manor in Ripon.

He was born June 8, 1937 in Appleton, the son of John F. and Esther (Retzlaff) Geer. He graduated from Princeton High School in 1955, and attended the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh. John married Bernice Reiser on January 17, 1959. She preceded him in death in November of 1999. He married Joyce Liska on October 21, 2000.

John began his working career with Ripon Knitting Works in 1956, starting in the factory and working his way up to Comptroller when he left in 1969 to take an accounting position with Fort Howard Paper Company in Green Bay. He returned to Ripon in 1970 to take the position of Comptroller at First National Bank of Ripon (later to become Valley Bank) where he eventually became Vice-President and Cashier, and a member of the Board of Directors. In 1993, he retired from banking to become a Wisconsin Licensed & Certified Real Estate Appraiser working with Clarke & Associates of Ripon.

Throughout his career, John was active in his church and community. He was elected to the Ripon City Council in 1968, and served on the Board of Directors of Russell Manor Apartments. He was a Past President of the Ripon Chamber of Commerce and Past President of the Kettle Moraine Chapter of Bank Administrative Institute. He was a Past President of Ripon Rotary Club and also served as Treasurer for many years. In addition, he served as Treasurer of the Ripon Baseball Boosters Club and Ripon Community Tennis Association. He also coached baseball for many years for Ripon Little League and Babe Ruth League. He was a member of the Church Council at Mt. Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, and served several terms as Treasurer and also Secretary. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Immanuel United Methodist Foundation. John was an avid sports fan and enjoyed attending Ripon High School and Ripon College games. Playing tennis was one of his favorite activities.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Joyce of Ripon; son, John Geer (Toni) of Bolingbrook, IL; daughter, Jill Geer (Paul Souza) of North Attleboro, MA; son, Tom Geer of Madison; stepdaughter, Tammy Liska Jahns (Richard) of Ripon; stepson, John Liska (Crissy) of Goodyear, AZ; grandchildren, Connor & Aidan Geer of Bolingbrook, IL, Jordyn & Cade Jahns of Ripon, and Miles & Cameron Souza of North Attleboro, MA.; brother, James L. Geer (Anne) of Arborvitae; and sister, Shirley Dashner (Joe) of Neenah. He is further survived by sisters-in-law, Betty Dubberstein (Gordon) of Oshkosh, Barbara Pinch of Fond du Lac, Beverly Mangio (Vince) of FL, and Gail Ingram (Carl) of Minnesota City, MN; and brothers-in-law, Robert Reiser (Karen) of Ripon, Joseph Reiser (Taffy Burmeister) of Wautoma. In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral service for John F. Geer will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 18, 2005 at Immanuel United Methodist Church in Ripon, with the Rev. Neil S. Wilson officiating. Visitation will be Friday evening from 4-7 p.m. at Butzin-Marchant Funeral Home, and again on Saturday from 9:30-11 a.m. at the church. Inurnment will be in Garden of the Cross in Ripon. A memorial has been established in his name for Immanuel United Methodist Church and the American Cancer Society.
