Jonathan Kenyon Peck, age 97, of Ripon, died Wednesday, March 15, 2000, at Parkview Care Center.
He was born December 6, 1902, in West Pittston, PA, the son of Jesse Luther and Jeanette (Bryden) Peck. He attended Wyoming Seminary, Kingston, PA. He received his MS in Electrical Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA in 1925, after which he worked for General Electric in Schenectady, NY. From 1927 until 1 933, he worked as an electrical engineer, studying the problems of arcing of electric signals, part of a research team jointly sponsored by several electric companies. From 1933 until retirement in 1968, he was an actuary for Metropolitan Life Ins. Co. in New York City. Mr. Peck was a member of Kappa Eta Kappa fraternity and Tau Beta Pi honorary engineering fraternity. He was a 72 year member of the Free Masons, having joined in 1928. At the time of his death, he was a member and Past Master of Hawthorne Fortitude Lodge, Ramsey, NJ, and a member of the Prairie View Lodge in Ripon. He was an honorary lifetime member of the Adirondack Mountain Club, Nawakwa Chapter, NY. He became an Associate in the Society of Actuaries in 1940, and a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries in 1966. Mr. Peck was a member of the First Congregational Church of Ripon (a 10 year choir member), an active volunteer for the Ripon Red Cross Blood Drives, and a member of South Woods Park Assn. On June 22, 1929, he married Gretchen Kathryn McFarland in Terre Haute, IN. After a brief residences in Michigan, S. Carolina and New York City, they moved to Ramsey, NJ, where they lived for over 50 years before moving to Ripon in 1987. Gretchen preceded him in death on April 18, 1988. He is survived by his daughter, Nancy Peck Royce (Robert) of Ripon; 2 grandsons, Jonathan Peck Royce (Suzanne) of Aurora, IL, and James Wilfred Royce (Esther) of Rockford, IL; 5 great-grandchildren, Alexis Ann and Kristen Ellen of Aurora, IL, and Samantha Laura, Eric Nicholas and Sarah Mahala of Rockford, IL; brother-in-law, Morton L. Lillie of Bridgeton, MO; and 4 nieces, Patricia Lillie Davis of Bridgeton, MO, Jane Lilhie Stark of New York, NY, Susan Lillie Hayes of Bainbridge Is., WA, and Roberta Lillie Horres of Cordesville, SC.
A memorial service by Rev. Debora Hillgartner of the First Congregational Church will be held on Sat. March 25, 2000, at 11:30 AM in the church sanctuary. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to the First Congregational Church, South Woods Park Association or to the Free Masons. Inurnment will be in Union Cemetery, Ramsey, NJ.
