Kenneth Cotton

Kenneth William Cotton, age 71, of Ripon, WI, passed away on April 4, 1993, at home after a brief illness with cancer.

He was born on March 27, 1922, in Augusta, WI, to the late Warren Cotton and Mona (Smith) Brandt. He was a 1939 graduate of Ripon High School. On May 15, 1948, he married Ferrel Scholler. Ken served with the 14th Armored Division in Europe, and thoroughly enjoyed attending Army reunions to keep in touch with his friends. He earned a Victory Medal, American Theater Ribbon, European African Vice Bar, and Service Stripe, and Good Conduct Medals. After his honorable discharge from the Army in 1946 as a Tech 5, he worked at Speed Queen, serving at President of the Local United Steel Workers of America. After leaving Speed Queen, he was a rural mail carrier for Route 2, Ripon for 40 years. Ken was a member of the Million Mile Club and earned a 39 year safe driving award. He served as Union Steward for the Rural Letter Carriers Association for most of the 40 years that he belonged. He was an avid sports fan, who worked part-time as a sports writer for the Oshkosh Daily Northwestern newspaper for 20 years. He also worked as an official for both high school and college track meets. Most important, Ken was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed spending time with this family whenever possible.

He is survived by his wife, Ferrel; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Vallen of Ripon, and Dennis and Georgean, all of Ripon; two daughters and sons-in-laws, Jeannine and Richard Hirokane of Green Bay and Judy and Mark Winland of Ripon; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, George and Irene of Searcy, AR; two half-brothers, Warren of Chicago, and Ron of Largo, FL; and one step-brother, Herbert Brandt. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Merlin.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, at 10:30 a.m. at the Butzin-Marchant Funeral Home in Ripon. The Reverend Bryan Fritsch will officiate. Interment will follow in the Rosendale Cemetery, Rosendale. Friends may call Tuesday from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. A memorial has been established for Cancer Research.
