Kenneth Lay

Colonel Kenneth E. Lay, 87, U.S. Army Retired, of Ripon, WI, died unexpectedly at his home Monday night July 23, 2001.

He was born September 23, 1913, in Williamston, Michigan, son of Frank and Laura (Mills) Lay. He graduated from Williamston High School, Michigan State University with a BS degree and University of Wisconsin, Madison with a MA degree.

Colonel Lay was a veteran of 26 years of service in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the 4th Infantry Division during World War II, taking part in the D-Day amphibious landing in the Normandy coast of France and the drive to Paris and into Germany. He also served with the U.S. Army Corps in the Korean War. Awards and decorations include the Silver Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, Purple Heart with two Oak Leaf Clusters and Combat Infantry Badge. During his 26-year military career, he also served with the U.S. Army General Staff in Washington DC, Far East Command in Tokyo, Japan, U.S. Army Europe, U.S. Army Command and General Staff College.

After retirement from the Army, he was employed as Director of College Relations at Ripon College for 12 years, and was president of the Green Lake Association for 7 years. He served 2 terms as a supervisor on the Fond du Lac County Board of Supervisors and 5 years on the Ripon City Parks and Recreation Committee. Mr. Lay was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church Parish, member and past president of Ripon Rotary Club, and member of Sigma Delta Chi, the professional journalism society.

In June 1947, he married Theodeanne Dwyer, and she preceded him in death in 1974. He later married Irene Rashid in 1980.

Survivors include his wife Irene Lay of Ripon; his children, Kathleen (Robert) Borges of St. Louis, MO and William (Lisa) Lay of Port Washington, NY; and grandchildren, Elizabeth and Margaret Borges, and Nathanael, Jinyo, Kori, Kalia and Jina Lay. He is further survived by his stepchildren, Judith (Donald) Christensen of Appleton, Susan (Richard) Horn of Providence, RI, Robert Rashid and partner Holly Cohn of Madison and Steven (Beatrix) Rashid of Evanston, IL; step-grandchildren, Martha, Sarah, Emily and Nell Christensen, and Robert and Daniel Rashid. Survivors also include sisters, Dorothy Blossey and Thelma McManus of Michigan. He was preceded in death by his brother, Russell Lay.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 am on Friday, July 27, 2001, at St. Patrick Catholic Church with Father John A. Schmitz officiating. Visitation will be Friday, from 9 – 11:00 am at the church. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA. Memorials in his name may be given to Ripon College or the Salvation Army.
