Lawrence Larry Samuel Gygax, age 79, of Waukesha, WI, passed away on Thursday, January 7, 2016 at his home surrounded by his family.
Larry was born August 13, 1936, in Waukesha, WI, the son of Samuel Frederick and Hazel (Dingeldine) Gygax. He graduated from Waukesha High School and later received specialized training in welding and heavy equipment maintenance. On August 13, 1960, Larry married Joanne Rasmussen in Waukesha. Larry was employed as a heavy equipment mechanic at Eichstedts Implement Dealer, Harnischfeger and International Harvester and worked as a maintenance mechanic for Waukesha County Park System for 25 years. He was a member of The Terpsicordian Club, Waukesha Aviation Club and The First Baptist Church of Waukesha. Larry was a former member of BMWMOA. Larry was well-known for being a good steward of his body and health, avid bicyclist, an accomplished pilot, master fabricator and a natural engineer.
Larry was a kind and gentle man, with desire, motivation and practiced discipline, investing himself in the fullness of his life. Larry loved his family and was deeply admired by his children, grandchildren, other family members and friends. It was important to him to be helpful in any possible way. Among many things, he will be remembered for his expertise and help in moving and installing the pipe organ at The First Baptist Church, Waukesha; completely restoring a 1941 Taylorcraft and flying it off his home airstrip and cycling daily on the Glacial Drumlin trail.
Survivors include his daughter, Karen (Hugo) Gygax Rodriguez; son, David Gygax; grandchildren, Derek and Andrew Rodriguez and step-grandchild, David (Robin) Rodriguez and grandchildren, David Gygax II and Evelyn Gygax-Krueger; siblings, Howard (Chris) Gygax, Bonnie (Gary) McDermott and Phyllis Petri; sister-in-law, Betty Gygax; blessed companion, Lee Baker of 8 years. He is further survived by many nieces and nephews. Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Hazel and Samuel Gygax; wife of 47 years, Joanne Gygax and sibling, Carl Gygax.
Visitation for Larry will be held on Saturday, January 16, 2016, from 9 11:30 am at The First Baptist Church of Waukesha, 247 Wisconsin Ave., Waukesha, WI 53186.
A Memorial Service for Larry will be held on Saturday, January 16, 2016, at 11:30 am at The First Baptist Church of Waukesha. Reverend Gerry Krupp will officiate. It was Larrys expressed wish that, in lieu of flowers, young pilots be trained. A memorial fund has been established for this purpose. It was also Larrys wish that his body be donated to help training at the Medical College of Wisconsin.
