Leon George Flanagan, age 95, of Pickett, Wisconsin, died Saturday, September 12, 2009, at Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
He was born October 27, 1913, in Price County, WI, to William D. and Elizabeth (Brueske) Flanagan. On June 18, 1938, he was united in marriage to Dorothy M. Brightman, who preceded him in death on February 5, 1996. Leon graduated from Oshkosh High School and received a degree in education from Oshkosh State Teachers College (now UW-Oshkosh). He received a Masters degree from Utah State University in 1968. A life-long educator and musician, he taught at schools in Crandon, Chetek, Seymour, and Columbus, WI; and played in a variety of dance bands until well after his retirement in 1972. He began full-time traveling and achieved a goal of visiting all 50 states. In 1979, he moved to Mission, Texas, continuing to travel each summer. He returned to Pickett in 1997. He was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Parish, Ripon, WI.
Leon is survived by his son, Lawrence (Judith) Flanagan, Kokomo, IN; daughters, Carol (Lee) Angell, Redding, CA; Kathy Moore, Anacortes, WA; Mary (Scott Kearney) Flanagan, Pickett, WI; Brothers and sisters, William D. Flanagan, Chippewa Falls, WI; Carroll E. Flanagan, Janesville, WI, Elizabeth Freund, Omro, WI; Merlyn Flanagan, Red Granite, WI; Elaine Brisky, Mequon, WI; Dennis (Margaret) Flanagan, Red Granite, WI; Jeanette (Robert) Lotz, Glendale, CA; grandchildren, Kerri Neidlinger, Beth McCabe, Kevin Flanagan, Kristen Smith, Brett Angell, Matthew Moore, Robert Moore; great-grandchildren, Elle and Emma Angell, Scott and Mark Neidlinger, Cory and Connor Smith, Destin Moore, and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; his parents; and brothers, Milton, Robert, Clayton; sisters-in-law, Lorraine, Katherine, Margaret, Ginny; brothers-in-law, Sanford Brayton, James Brisky, Rudy Freund.
A memorial Mass will be held on Wednesday, September 16, 2009, at 11:00 A.M. at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, 218 Blossom St. in Ripon, WI. Reverend Robert A. Fictum and Father John A. Schmitz will be officiating. Inurnment will be held in Liberty Prairie Cemetery, Pickett, WI.
