Leonard (Zep) Keith

January 27, 1922 — April 25, 2003

Leonard (Zep) Thaddeus Keith, age 81, of Ripon, died Friday morning, April 25, 2003, at the Markesan Resident Home in Markesan.

He was born January 27, 1922, in Milwaukee, the son of Walter and Mary (Kwieciszewski) Keith. He attended St. Alexander’s and was a 1940 graduate of Pulaski High School in Milwaukee. Leonard had been captain of his high school basketball team, and had been picked to the Milwaukee “All City” Basketball Team. As a graduate of Pulaski High School, he received the “W” award which was awarded to one student who excelled in scholarship and athletics in each high school in Wisconsin. Leonard had been Milwaukee City Champion for the 440-yard race for 2 years, and second in the state. During World War II, Leonard served in the U.S. Coast Guard on the Mounted Beach Patrol for 3-1/2 years, patrolling the beaches on horseback, 7 hours a night, 5 nights a week. He had earlier received an athletic scholarship to Oregon State University and Ripon College, and chose Ripon. He graduated in 1950, receiving his B.A. plus Wisconsin Teaching Certificate in Physical Education, Biology and English. While in college he had been affiliated with Delta Sigma Psi fraternity.

On October 9, 1954, he married Jean Schlaack in Ripon. He was an American Family Insurance Representative, and later was manager of the Ripon College Bookstore and Pub, and mail center and office supplies supervisor. Due to health problems (Multiple Sclerosis), he retired in April of 1968. He was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, AARP, State & National MS Chapters, Ripon College Retirees, and Charter Member of the World War II Memorial Society.

Survivors include his wife, Jean of Ripon; brother, Ted (Lorraine) Keith of Hales Corners; nephew, Bradley (Kathy) Keith of Hudson; brother-in-law, Wilbert Schlaack of FL; sister-in-law, Dorothy (Robert) Lieske of Ripon; nephews & nieces Bernadine (Fred) Loker of Winneconne, Sharon (Richard) Rosenau of Oshkosh, Gary (Cheryl) Lieske of Ripon, John (Nancy) Lieske of Oshkosh, James (Lynnette) Lieske, Wayne (Pat) Albright & Carol (Randy) Cluppert, all of Ripon, and Karen (John) Rice & Cindy (Tom) Conlin, all of Brookfield; 23 great-nieces & nephews; and 10 great-great-nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and mother & father-in-laws.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 29, 2003, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church with Rev. Robert A. Fictum officiating. Visitation will be at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church on Tuesday from 9 a.m. until the time of the mass. Interment will be in Garden of the Cross Cemetery, Ripon. Memorials may be given to the Keith Scholarship at Ripon College, St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, or the National Multiple Sclerosis WI Chapter, W223 N608 Saratoga Drive, Suite 110, Waukesha, WI 53186-0401.
