Leone Marie Hoffman, 101, of Ripon, passed away on Saturday, November 26 2005, at Fountain View Care Center in Ripon.
She was born May 22, 1904, on a farm in the Town of Ripon, one of 7 children of William and Marie (Heidtman) Hoffman. Leone was a graduate of Ripon High School in 1922 and Ripon College in 1926, with a degree in languages (Latin and Spanish.) She attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and received a Masters Degree in Ancient History in 1927. She taught high school Latin and History for 3 years in Forreston, IL and was school librarian for 15 years in Waukesha. During Leones twenty years in the 60s & 70s as director and secretary in Wisconsin Natural Foods Associates, her work influenced more people positively than in all her other years. Leone lived in Ripon most of her life, and was a member of Our Saviours United Church of Christ in Ripon.
Leones philanthropic works included supporting the Neillsville Juvenile Facility until it closed and supporting Ripon College and Lakeland College. Secrets to a long life included good genes, living right eating naturally cultivated organic foods, having the right attitude which included a hearty sense of humor, and staying active whether at work or play. Leone wrote 3 books, Our Wisconsin Farm in 1993, Turn of the Century Courtship: Mom & Dads Letters in 1998, and The Carl & Christine Heidtman Heritage in 2000 with Ann Marie Godfreys help. Leone joined the Ripon Historical Society from the 60s on and was very active for many years, and also joined the Food Co-op of Ripon and was very involved. Her organic gardening at 521 Liberty St, Ripon, was her secret to long life and health. Prior to 2004, Leone was only in the hospital once for adenoids and tonsils removal at age 8 or 9. Linda & David Myers put together a 100th year birthday celebration for Leone at Michalenes in Ripon in May of 2004.
Survivors include sisters, Marion Babe Hermann of Ripon and Gladys Strebig of Medford; sister-in-law, June Hoffman of Redwood City, CA; nephews, nieces; great-nieces and nephews; neighbors; relatives in the Michigan Upper Peninsula; and many friends and acquaintances. She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers, Charles and Orville Hoffman, and 2 sisters, Vera Myers and Irene Masche.
