Leslie A. Wildes, 100, passed away on August 10, 2007.
He was born on May 8, 1907 and raised in Chicago. He attended Ripon College where he met his wife, Alma Sherwood. He and Alma resided in Green Lake for many years. Leslie served in the U.S. Army during WWII and had many adventures driving the first convoy over the Burma Road.
After WWII, Leslie worked for the State of Wisconsin first as a vocational counselor for what is now Job Service and later as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor. During his tenure as a Rehabilitation Counselor, he earned his Masters degree in Rehabilitation Counseling from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee at the age of 61.
His hobbies and interests included photography where he had his own darkroom to develop and print photographs, woodworking-making functional furniture, toys for friends children, and educational materials for his daughters classroom; travel-he has been to all 50 states and several European countries, shopping for bargains, and automobiles-especially Fords! He was a member of the Green Lake Lions, Green Lake Legion Post #306, and the Federated Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur H. Wildes and Nellie Ion Wildes, his sister, Alice Wildes Greig, his brother, Wilbur H. Wildes, and his wife of over 50 years, Alma Sherwood Wildes. He is survived by his daughter, Ellen Wildes, a sister-in law, Willie Williams, a nephew in Arizona, nieces in Utah and the Chicago area, and first cousins in Arizona and the Chicago area.
Visitation for Leslie A. Wildes will be held on Tuesday, August 14, 2007 from 4:00-7:00PM at the Butzin-Marchant Funeral Home in Ripon, and again on Wednesday, August 15, 2007 from 10:00-11:00AM at the Butzin-Marchant Funeral Home.
Funeral Services for Leslie A. Wildes will be held on Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at 11:00AM at the Butzin-Marchant Funeral Home with Reverend Neil S. Wilson officiating. Inurnment will be at Dartford Cemetery in the City of Green Lake at a later date. Memorials can be made to: Reading for the Blind and Dyslexic 20 Roszel Rd.
