Lester Laboyeske

November 11, 1914 — August 21, 2000

Lester Joseph Laboyeske, age 85, of Green Lake, WI, died Monday morning, August 21, 2000, at Mercy Medical Center, Oshkosh.

He was born on November 11, 1914, in Princeton, WI, the only child of Rufus and Helen (Marshall) Laboyeske. He attended kindergarten at Jefferson School in Fond du Lac and later Princeton Public School. Mother, Helen, died July 11, 1922, and Lester then lived with grandmother, Catherine Laboyeske and the Michael Marshall family. On July 2, 1944, he married Dorothy Boers in a home ceremony officiated by the Reverend E.E. Schieler. Mr. Laboyeske served on the North Fond du Lac Village Board and was Commander of the Trier-Puddy American Legion Post. He also served as councilman, vice-president and president of Our Saviour’s United Church of Christ, along with having been chairman of the Christian Education Committee. He has also served as usher and greeter at the church. He was a charter and active member of the Green Lake Preservation Society.

Lester served in the US Army during WWII from November 11, 1939 – until September 7, 1945, with 1070th Engineer Service Detatchment of the 21st Engineering Battalion with the rank of Master Sergeant. During his service he was stationed with the Southern Command in Panama, various Pacific Islands including the Philippines, and was honored with many citations including, Bronze, the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Service Medal, American Theatre Service Medal, American Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with Bronze Star, 5 Overseas Service Bars, 4 Discharge Emblems, and the Rifle and Carbine Expert Badge. On March 17, 1950, Lester enlisted in the Ready Reserve Unit of the Armed Forces and served until March 3, 1959.

He was employed at Chicago-Northwestern Railway in North Fond du Lac from 1945 – 1968 and retired from Giddings and Lewis in 1978.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, who wishes to thank the many friends, clergy and medical staff who have assisted and expressed prayerful care and concern. He is further survived by his mother-in-law, Artolena Boers and one brother-in-law, Lawrence Boers, both of Ripon; five nieces and nephews, Doris LeViness, Roger Boers, June Smith, Victor Boers II and Wanda Boers.

Services will be held at Our Saviour’s United Church of Christ on Wednesday, August 23, 2000, at 4:00 pm with the Reverend Rebecca A. Johnston officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the time of the service at the church. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery in Ripon. Memorials may be given to the donor’s choice.
