Marion M. Gehri, age 86, of Ripon, passed away Friday Morning, January 26, 2007 at Ripon Medical Center.
Marion was born on April 12, 1920, in Ripon, WI, to Otto F. and Alma (Wegner) Mathwig. She graduated from Ripon High School June 1938. She then attended Sheboygan Business College. On July 14, 1940 she married William E. Gehri in Tacoma. She lived in Ripon all of her life except about 4 years during World War II when she lived in Tacoma, Washington. Her husband, William, was originally from Tacoma. She and her husband were members of the First Congregational Church in Ripon since 1941.
During World War II while Bill was in the army Marion worked at the Seattle-Tacoma shipyards and later, after the Victory of Japan, at American Red Cross Fort Lewis Washington. Bill was in the South Pacific at the time of Victory of Japan, but didnt get to return home until after serving an additional year in the Army of Occupation in Japan.
Together with her husband, Marion had a combined 15 year service in Ripons Boy Scouting program. Bill was a Cub master in Pack 35 and Scoutmaster of Troop 35 that was sponsored by Rotary-Kiwanis. Marion served as Den mother and assistant to Bill. Marion drove school bus in the Ripon School District for 25 years, 23 years for Van Metre Transportation Co. and 2 years for Bloedels L.B Leasing, Inc. after Van Metres sold the business in 1978. With her husband, Marion enjoyed bowling for many years in local leagues, state and national tournaments, downhill skiing and golf.
She is survived by her 2 sons; Bruce, R.N. (Paula) Gehri of Warwick, R.I. and Col. Mark J.D. (RET.) (Vickie) Gehri of U.S. Air Force (30 years) of Colorado Springs, CO. Also surviving are 2 grandsons, David Gehri of Sacramento, CA and Christopher (Rachel) Gehri are serving in Germany in the U.S. Army; nephew, Robert C. Mathwig of Bremerton, WA; niece, Marcia English of Seattle, WA and cousins, Preston (Marlene) Koentop of Ohio, Marjorie (Arthur) Schmuhl of Markesan, Elaine (Edwin) Harmsen and Fern Brechlin both of Waupun.
According to her wishes there will be no visitation or funeral services and cremation has taken place. Memorials may be sent to the First Congregational Church of Ripon or the Auxiliary of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 5278.
