At Hospice Home of Hope in Fond du Lac on Sunday morning, December 1, 2002, Martha E. Murray met her Lord face to face.
She was born January 3, 1912, the last of eight children born to Melvin Olaus and Anna Sather Brye on the family farm near Coon Valley, Wisconsin. She was preceded in death by her parents and all her siblings: Ruth, Amalia Molly, Arthur, Clarence, Milnor, Louise and Emil. She graduated from Gale College in 1931, and earned her nursing degree in 1934 from Mt. Sinai Hospital of Nursing, Milwaukee. She served as Second Lieutenant in the Army Nurses Corps in World War II. At that time she met and married Willard G. Murray, of Brooklyn Township, Wisconsin and lived there on the Murray family farm between Green Lake and Ripon. Mr. Murray himself passed away in 1970.
The Murrays had four sons: Stephen, who preceded his mother in death in 1987; Knute of Altoona, Iowa; Wendell of Fond du Lac; and Daniel of Albuquerque, New Mexico. She liked to say her daughters were handpicked, namely her daughters-in-law Annette (Wendells wife) and Lynette (Dans wife) and Barbara Murray. Mrs. Murray also had five grandsons: Erik and wife Alice of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Joshua and his wife Lisa of Waukesha; Caleb of Madison; Nathan of Albuquerque, New Mexico; James of Washington, D.C.; and one granddaughter, Victoria Tory of Wheaton, Illinois. She was also well-loved by many nephews and nieces, especially Donald Brye, fellow members of Trinity Evangelical Free Church, Ripon; fellow residents and staff members at Kingswood Place; and the many dear friends she made. She touched many lives through her work in nursing, but especially during the years she participated in adult foster care and operated a community-based residential facility. She always viewed those who lived in her home through these programs as part of her family.
A memorial service for Martha Murray will be held on Thursday, December 5, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Trinity Evangelical Free Church, Ripon with Pastor Marlin Mohrman officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. at the church. Memorials may be directed to Trinity Evangelical Free Church in her name.
