Marthajean Denton, age 85, of Princeton, passed away on Monday, January 18, 2010, at Sunnyview Health Care Center in Princeton, WI.
Marthajean was born on July 5, 1924, in Chicago, IL, the daughter of Howard and Laura (Rose) Denton Sr. She graduated from high school in Chicago, then went on to Chicago City College seeking a higher career achievement for her and her family. Marthajean worked at the downtown Loop Post Office in Chicago while attending college and singing in the church choir. Marthajean who was known to her close friends as Marty will be surely missed. Marthajean became a single mother when the times were hard and she chooses not to hide in a closet and made a living without assistance. Marthajean a woman far advanced for todays times, accomplishing these things during the harsh times of the 50s, 60s and 70s. She has achieved what today women only hopes to achieve. Marthajean though raised in a Baptist Church, changed religious faiths in 1952, to raise her child in a religion that did not look down on her as a single woman with a child. Holding her head high, Marthajeans self esteem and personal promise of not being down trodden strived for being a better person. She had TB in 1959, which caused her to loose her gusto towards life but wrapped her up in the raising of her daughter. Marthajean sought out a new life and she moved to Racine, WI in 1963, and then to Beloit, WI in 1972, so she could be closer to her daughter and the educational progress she wanted for her. In 1995, Marthajean bought a house and moved to Princeton, where she stayed until her stroke where she was placed in health care services. She was baptized in 1938, at Berrean Baptist Church in Chicago, IL and reborn in Christ at Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church in Chicago in 1951.
Survivors include one daughter, Wendy (Gary Tillmann) Frankalene Compton of Beloit, WI; two grandchildren, Derek and Mackenzie Tillmann of Beloit, WI; one great-granddaughter, Anne Tillmann of Beloit, WI; one sister, Betty Rose Bussell of Chicago, IL; one brother, Howard Denton Jr. of Chicago, IL; one sister-in-law, Denise Denton of Chicago, IL; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Marthajean was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Jeneva Cynthia Denton Wooten.
