Mary Alice Linde

Mary Alice Linde, age 92, of Ripon, WI, passed away on Friday, January 31, 2014, at Prairie Place in Ripon.
Mary Alice was born January 9, 1922, in Waukegan, IL. She was the daughter of Harold and Esther (Kennedy) Allen. She attended Knox College in Galesburg, IL and graduated magna cum laude. She was the first female to earn a degree in chemistry from Knox College. Her first job in her field was at The Dow Chemical Co. in Midland, MI. Mary Alice enlisted in the WAVES in 1944 and was a pharmacist mate at the U.S. Naval Hospital, St. Albans, Long Island, New York. She was honorably discharged in 1946 and married Matthew Broughton of Yonkers, NY that year. He preceded Mary Alice in death in 1973.
In 1967 following her career as a full-time homemaker and mother, she returned to the workforce and was an executive secretary at American Can R&D headquarters in Barrington, IL. It was there that she met and, when widowed, married Norman J Linde in 1975. He preceded her in death in 1995.
In her prime, Mary Alice was an energetic worker in the churches she belonged to which included First Baptist Church of Waukegan, IL, Federated Church of Wauconda, IL, and St. Michael's Episcopal Church of Barrington, IL. When she moved to Ripon, she joined Grace Lutheran Church. For much of her life, Mary Alice was a tireless volunteer for many causes and organizations, including and especially the League of Women Voters.
Survivors include her daughter, Jeanne (John) Stiernberg of Sherman Oaks, CA; her son, Matthew Broughton Jr. of Ripon; her step-son Norman W (Betty Douglas) Linde of Chicago, IL; her step-son David (Elizabeth) Linde of Bettendorf, IA; her step-daughter Janet (John) Cleaver of Oshkosh, WI; six grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. Mary Alice was preceded in death by her parents, both her husbands, and her sister, Jean Beagle Lowy.
Visitation for Mary Alice will be held on Thursday, February 6, 2014, from 5 - 8:00 pm at Butzin-Marchant Funeral Home, 515 Mayparty Dr., Ripon, WI 54971 and again on Friday, February 7, 2014, from 10 - 11 am at Butzin-Marchant Funeral Home in Ripon.
Funeral service for Mary Alice will be held on Friday, February 7, 2014, at 11:00 am at Butzin-Marchant Funeral Home in Ripon. Reverend Clay R. Salmela will officiate. Inurnment will take place later this year at Wauconda Cemetery in Wauconda, IL.
