Mary Ellen Farrell

Mary Ellen (Wilson) Farrell, 98, died on Monday, December 7, 2015, at Barrett House in Ripon, Wisconsin.

She was born Jan. 7, 1917, on a farm near Dover, Minnesota, a daughter of Paul and Lily Wilson.
She was educated in the schools of Dover and St. Charles, Minnesota, graduating in 1935. After moving to Winona she worked at Choate’s Department Store for several years before becoming a full – time homemaker.

On Aug. 23, 1937, she married Francis Farrell in Rochester, Minnesota. They lived their married life in Winona where Francis was a barber for 57 years. They had two sons, Martin and Michael. When her children were young she was active in the Lincoln School PTA and was a Cub Scout den mother.

She was a member St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Winona for over 50 years and sang in the choir. She also sang in the Winona Sweet Adelines for the entire history of the organization. She was a volunteer at Community Memorial Hospital (now Winona Health) for many years, working in the coffee shop, gift shop and supervising the Candy Stripers.

An avid gardener, she was a member of the Winona Garden Club and continued to work in her home garden until well into her 90's. In the 1950's she began bicycling and was still riding around Lake Winona in 2010.

She is survived by her sons, Martin of Ripon, Wisconsin, and Michael (Charlotte) of Morris, Illinois; nieces Judy (Edwin) Maus of Minnesota City and Linda (Gordy) Ferguson of Dover, Minnesota, grand nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1990, her sister Mildred in 1982, and nephews James and John Roper.

In accordance with her wishes she was cremated. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 12, 2015, at 11:00 am at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 265 Lafayette St., Winona, Minnesota, with the Rev. Fr. Lawrence J. Green officiating.

The family is deeply grateful for the loving and highly professional care provided by the staffs of Lake Winona Manor, Barrett House and St. Agnes Hospice of Hope.
