Maxwell Heffernan

December 29, 1906 — August 18, 1990

Maxwell E. Heffernan, age 83, of 521 Fairview Ave., Ripon, WI, died Saturday, August 18, 1990, at Ripon Memorial Hospital.

He was born December 29, 1906, in Platteville, a son of Jesse and Pearl Kaump Heffernan. On November 23, 1962, he married Swanhild Dale Smith.

Mr. Heffernan graduated from Sheboygan High School and obtained further education at both Lakeland and Lawrence Colleges. He served in the U.S. Air Force Intelligence. Mr. Heffernan retired from Speed Queen in Ripon. He had previously been employed by the Allis Chalmers Mfg Co. and the U.S. Veterans Administration. For 8 years he served as Alderman and when needed, Acting Mayor for the City of Ripon. He was a member of the First Congregational Church in Ripon. Since 1942, he was a member of the American Legion Post #43 and served as Post Commander, County Commander-Fond du Lac Co, and County Post Service Officer for 40 years. He was a member of the 40&8 Legion Honor Society and Chef de Gare, and held other offices in the organization. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter #11. He was a Charter Member of Allis Chalmers Legion Post #500. He was a member of the Ripon Kiwanis Club since 1948, was Club President in 1972, and was Kiwanis Lt. Governor in 1974.

Survivors include his wife, Swanee; one son, Patrick (Joyce) of Manchester, NH; one step-son, Richard Smith of Chillicothe, IL; two grandchildren, Margaret Heffernan of Madison and Thomas Heffernan of Manchester, NH; one brother, Chief Justice Nathan (Dorothy) Heffernan of Madison. Preceding him in death were his parents and one sister, Clarissa Kirst.

A memorial service for Mr. Heffernan will be held Wednesday, August 22, 1990, at 11:00 am at the Butzin-Marchant Funeral Home, Ripon. There will be no visitation. Inurnment will be in Hillside Cemetery in Ripon.

A memorial in his name has been established for the First Congregational Church in Ripon.
