Norma Hielsberg

October 10, 1913 — January 18, 2000

Norma Esther Hielsberg, age 86, died Tuesday, January 18, 2000, at Parkview Care Center in Ripon. She was born October 10, 1913, in the rural Berlin area to John and Clara (Dornbrak) Traugott. Norma married Louis Hielsberg on June 17, 1934. They had two children, Joan and John.

Norma graduated from Ripon High School in 1930 and from Green Lake County Normal School the following year. She received a BS in Elementary Education from Wisconsin State College in Oshkosh in 1960. Norma taught at Arcade, Wilson, and Outlet Rural Schools. She spent the last 27 years of her career in the Ripon Public School System. She taught first grade at Ceresco and Roosevelt Schools, retiring in May of 1979. She was active in developing new math and reading programs, and served as President of the Ripon Teacher’s Association.

Norma enjoyed sewing, reading and playing bridge. She was an accomplished piano player; “Johnson Rag” being a favorite of the many people she played for.

Norma met Ruth Birge, a fellow teacher in 1960. They became good friends and shared 40 years of happy times together. During the past eight years, Ruth not only offered Norma friendship but also much needed care and companionship.

Norma is survived by her sister, Irma Burgess of Detroit, MI; daughter, Joan (Arthur) Foeste of Madison; son, John (Alice) of Iola; grandchildren, Kathy, Sheri, Aaron, Jessica, Troy and Heather; step-granddaughters, Tammy and Nicole; great-grandchildren, Cody, Jacob, Tiffany and angela; step-great-grandson, CJ.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis; parents and sister, Lorraine.

Funeral service will be Friday, January 21, 2000, at 11 am at Grace Lutheran Church, 430 Griswold St. Ripon, with Reverend Paul Holte officiating. Friends may call at the church Friday from 9 am until the time of the service. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Ripon. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that remembrances be made to support research for the blind.
