Phyllis Lockard-Hughes

December 22, 1956 — August 28, 2011

Phyllis Ann Lockard-Hughes, age 54, of Oshkosh, WI, passed away on Sunday, August 28, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center in Oshkosh, after a very difficult but courageous battle with breast cancer.

Phyllis was born December 22, 1956, in Lafayette, Indiana. She was adopted by Dr. Kenneth Hughes and Marilyn (Larson) Hughes. Phyllis attended school in Lafayette, IN, and in Oshkosh, WI, graduating from North High School in 1976, where she delighted in singing in the a cappella choir. She married and later divorced, at which point she moved to Oshkosh, where she raised her family. She worked in assisted living and home health care until April of this year. Phyllis grew up attending St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church where she sang in the choir and was active in the church youth group. She delighted in taking a mission trip to Appalachia where she worked with others repairing homes.

Phyllis was a sweet, warm-hearted person who endured many rough patches in life with courage and dignity. She was especially fond of both children and the elderly. Her grandchildren were especially close to her heart and she spent as much time with them as possible. She was saddened to learn that she would not get the chance to watch them grow up. She also had a special bond with her little kitty, Cali. Her willingness to help others was endless. Phyllis will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

Phyllis is survived by her three daughters, Angela (Adrian) Taylor, and their daughters, Adrianna and Angelina, of Indianapolis, Laura (Rhody) Sacdalan and their son, Avery, of Oshkosh and Jessica (fiancé, Josh Koteski) Newsom and their daughter, Kyleigh, of Oshkosh and her son, TJ Newsom, of Oshkosh; parents, Dr. Kenneth Hughes and Marilyn Hughes; sister, Jennifer (Dan) Posanski and their children, Meredith and Kathryn, of Oshkosh as well as several aunts, uncles and cousins and a very special friend and “soul mate”, Mark Phillips. Phyllis is also survived by a biological sister, Elaine (Michael) Tillery, of California, who was found in an internet search by her mother. They were able to meet and journey back to Lafayette to meet some biological relatives and to learn more about their “roots”. Phyllis was preceded in death by her grandparents, Robert and Elna Larson and William and Alice Hughes, and one brother, Shawn.

Also, thank you to Dr. Kohl and Dr. R. Weber and all the nurses and nursing staff who took care of her during her hospitalizations as well as the Hospice workers who made her last days as comfortable as possible. Also thanks to Pastor Karen Jewell for her caring and wise counsel. Special thanks to her children for their tireless efforts in caring for their mother, her affairs and her home.
