Richard Michael Updike, age 67, of Ripon, died Thursday morning, August 9, 2001, at Appleton Medical Center in Appleton after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born April 27, 1934, in Horicon, a son to Edward Clarence and Minnie (Michael) Updike, Sr. His younger years were in Horicon, and then moved to Oshkosh at the age of 12. Richard graduated from Oshkosh High School, and attended Iowa State College in Ames, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Army from February 9, 1955, to February 8, 1957. On January 3, 1955, he married Lois-Jean Bryan in Dubuque, Iowa. Richard worked at George Banta Corp. in Menasha for 37 years. He was a member of lmmanuel United Methodist Church, Ripon. He was very active in Habitat for Humanity. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Lois-Jean Updike of Ripon; daughters, Peggy (Arthur) Thylor of Ripon, Patti (Edward) Huber of Waupaca; son, Russell (Marie) Updike of Rapid City, SD; grandchildren, Nicole Brocks of Ripon, Nadya and Adam Davis of Oshkosh, Jennifer and Rebecca Heiser of Green Bay, Amelia Huber of Waupaca, and James and Brian Updike of Rapid City, SD; 2 great-grandchildren, Derek Heiser and Elizabeth Mathys, both of Green Bay; brother, Edward Updike, Jr. and life partner, Leah Ramish of Menasha; sister, Rosie (Lester) Marx of Horicon; aunt, Lillian Michael of Beaver Dam; brother-in-law, Charles W. Thom of Bradenton, FL; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Catherine; grandson, William; and sister, Joyce Lundsted.
Funeral service for Richard Updike will be 11 a.m. on Monday,
August 13, 2001, at Immanuel United Methodist Church, Ripon with the Reverends David Busker and Neil Wilson officiating. Visitation will be Monday at the church from 10-11 am. Interment will be in Oak Hill
Cemetery in Neenah. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.
He will be greatly missed by all his family and friends.
