Robert F. Raymond, age 77, of Galena, IL and Green Lake, WI, died July 23, 2009.
Bob was born in Escanaba, Michigan on March 28, 1932 to Claude R. and Mary R. Raymond.
Following graduation with honors in Chemical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame in 1954, Bob enthusiastically fulfilled his scholarship obligation by serving his country in the US Navy as an Engineering Officer aboard the minesweeper USS Murrelet. Bob commented that the work of disarming mines continues long after cessation of hostilities. During his service, he received a National Defense Ribbon and China Service Medal.
After discharge, he began work for UOP, Inc of Des Plaines, IL. An executive secretary, Joyce Betts, caught his eye and they were married on May 13, 1961. In his nearly 40 year career with UOP, he started at a pilot plant in Riverside, IL, and was involved in patenting many new technologies. He advanced in management and marketing to overseas offices in London and Brussels, and then back to the headquarters in Des Plaines. As the retired President of UOP Management Services Inc, his professional and technical consulting career spanned major refinery, petrochemical, and water purification projects in the U.S., Europe, Middle East, Africa, South Asia, and the Far East, improving many aspects of the world in which we live.
Bob particularly valued the relationships he developed all over the world and delighted in extensive handwritten correspondence throughout his life, including suggestions to generations of Notre Dame head football coaches. Devoted to his family, he was thrilled with the many accomplishments of his children, grandchildren and extended family. Bobs Roman Catholic faith guided his life and he fervently prayed for his family, his country and his fellow man.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce; sons, Stephen, Mark (Marianne), Michael (Julia), David (Candace), and Paul; grandchildren, Laura, Michelle, Carrie, Frederick, Stas, and Ivan; brother, Eugene (Marilyn); sister Paula (Lonnie) Miller and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Claude R.; mother, Mary R.; and sister, Mary Sue.
