Robert H. Bob Sweeney, age 67, of Ripon, died November 29, 1998, at his home.
He was born May 3, 1931, in Fond du Lac, a son to the late Dan J. and Emma (Holmes) Sweeney. He attended school in Fairwater and was a graduate of Ripon High School. On May 2, 1953, he married the former LaRayne Schmuhl. As a youngster, Bob spent a lot of time with his father learning about life and business, and began working for him at the Fairwater Canning Company. Bob then sold automobiles for 25 years, the last 5 of which he won many managerial and sales awards. In 1966, he started a real estate business called Action Agency which grew to include 4 surrounding cities. After a time, the real estate business began offering auctions as part of its service. In 1978, the auction business had grown to the point that one or the other had to go, and so the business of managing, cashiering and clerking auctions was born as Auction Associates, Inc. He was also instrumental in developing residential and commerical areas in Ripon.
Most of his adult life, Bob willingly spent teaching anyone who asked and some who didnt, about business and life in general. If he didnt know the answer, he would know where to send them to get it. Bob has always been a large supporter of his church and community. He sold his business to his eldest son, Tim in 1986, and has remained very active to date in every aspect of the day-to-day operation. He has served on committees for the local Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, the Town Board and Grace Lutheran Church. He was a member of the International Society of Appraisers, Vintage Chevrolet Club of America, Wisconsin Realtors (Graduate of GRI), and the National Auctioneers Association. In addition, he served as Staff Sergeant of the National Guard. In 1998, Bob was inducted into the WAA Hall of Fame at the Auctioneers Summer Convention in Waukesha.
He is survived by his wife, LaRayne; 3 children, Robyn (A.J.) Bum by and their daughter, Katie of West Bend, Tim (Deb) Sweeney and their son Casey of Green Lake, and Pat (Lisa) Sweeney of Ripon. He was preceded in death by a brother, Darwin Sweeney.
