Russell Stewart

Russell Stewart, 81, of Ripon, died Saturday, February 28, 1998, at Parkview Care Center in Ripon.

Russell was born the son of Charles A. and Ruth B. (Somers) Stewart, April 13, 1916, at Portage, WI. He was a graduate of Portage High School and U.W. Madison. He served in the military from 1941-1945, as a technical sergeant of the 744th Bomb Squadron U.S. Air Force. He flew 35 missions over Europe from Italy. On January 16, 1949, he married the former Shirley Winter in Reedsburg, WI. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church of Ripon, the V.F.W. of Ripon, and was the city’s District 3 Alderman for 16 years. He worked as a quality control food inspector for the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture and was also a Feed Sales Rep in the Ripon area for the Moorman Mfg. Co. Along with his family, the most important part of his life was his love of gardening. He maintained acres of gardens producing and selling fresh fruits and vegetables for nearly 20 years. His farm market was a joy to him and to the community of friends who depended on his good food and good humor. When not gardening he longed to fish, hunt and drive the countryside viewing nature in all seasons.

He will be sadly missed by his wife, Shirley; daughter Barbara (Vince) Rowan of Tomah, son Jim (Sandy Roggow) of Hazelhurst; 4 grandchildren, Adam & Heather Rowan and Maree & Madeline Stewart; I brother, Rodney(Jan) Stewart of Pardeeville; 4 sisters, Charlotte (Bernard) McCarthy of Chicago, Marion (Wayne) Waldenmeyer of Milwaukee, Phyllis (Melvin) Balliet of Portage, Marge (Anthony) Trapino of Lakewood, CO; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be Thursday, March 5, 1998, at 11 AM at Grace Lutheran Church, Ripon with the Rev. Paul Holte officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday, March 4 from 4 until 7 PM with a V.F.W. Service at 7 PM at the Butzin-Marchant Funeral Home and visitation again on Thursday from 10 AM
until the time of service at the church. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery,Ripon. A Memorial has been established.
